Sure, I can use my head when watching films Grieg. After all, I am not stupid :D .

In the end, its a subjective thing... some aspects of film can be objectively determined, but others are pure taste. My main objection with FMJ is the episodic makeup. It seems like the film gets split up into three parts, neither of which are quite satisfying, and neither which fulfill each other...

You can say a lot of about movies the young ones here have listed, like Donnie Darko, Fight Club or Titus, but hardly that they are stupid. Or that they don't take any thought to properly enjoy (I find that comment pretty patronizing, Grieg, have you seen Donnie Darko yet?). I'll admit that many of the movies I have listed bear a stigma of mindless violence, but those who see only the flying bullets miss a substantial part of them and I do not share their reasons to like said movies.

You can watch Lock Stock and see only people getting shot, or you can appreciate the brilliance and the comedy of the way things come together and the genuinely amusing characters that appear. You can watch Lola Rennt and see only a girl running through Berlin, or you can ponder the implications of a time loop and the suggestions you get that everyone involved in it is aware of having been there before. You can watch Gladiator and see only Russel Crowe punching people, or you can contemplate the tragic figure of Commodus, who tries so hard to be appreciated yet is always outdone by Maximus in everything, including gaining the affection of his loved ones.

If I had a problem using my noodle when watching movies I would have listed Indiana Jones, Assault on Precinct 13 or Starship Troopers.

Why? It's subjective... Since when was finding movies bad considered poor taste?

Finding them not to your taste is fine but it is poor taste IMO to label other people's choices as shite simply because they don't appeal to you.

I'd find it hard to list my single favourite, since this often depends on the mood I'm in, but up there would be:

    The Crow
    Platoon
    Pulp Fiction
    I, Robot
Monty Python, Holy Grail and Life of Brian

But also there are others I'd put on as entertainment rather than to really watch.

Patronizing? Perhaps but I think this thread began to deteriorate when it turned from discussing one's favorite movies to criticizing the coices of others.

Grieg, don't take it personally... I am criticizing the movie on subjective grounds, not you. My opinion on Full Metal Jacket has nothing to do with my opinion on you. For me, movies are as subjective as music or paintings. I can respect other choices while finding their choice to be poor personally.

Yes! This is also a good movie. I try to use at least one phrase from that movie each and every day of my life (there really are some great one-liners!).

I thought Alien 3 was the best in the series... Aliens was also great, but Alien Ressurection was terrible! As far favourite movies of all time I will be a dork and say Dr Zhivago, The Blue Max, From Russia With Love, The Good the Bad and the Ugly, and of course, Star Wars episode V 'The Empire Strikes Back'

Concerning Full Metal Jacket I thought the first half was a masterpiece... but i think once they got out of the training camp and into Vietnam it lost its psychological edge... Apocalypse Now mixed war with surrealism alot better

When Alien moved out of robotics and into CGI, it lost a lot.

    Panzerman
You can't respect someones choice, while at the same time calling their choice poor. Rather say that you respect other persons right to make choices which are different from your own.

By the way, for those who like quasi-interlectual movies, 'Pi' is excellent. 'Requim for a dream' is also good, though it would still come second to Pi.

Not the original surely? That was a masterpiece of it's genre.

The original Assault on 13th precint is a pretty good movie.

I am yet to see a remake which outdoes the original. It seems like there are a lot of remakes around these days, with The Fog, S.O.S. Poseidon and other such deplicates.

It will be interesting to see whether the new 007 Casino Royale will break this trend, though.

A re-make that out does the original? Now there's an idea. It's a bit like trying to find a film that is better than the book upon which it is based.

Perhaps a split topic is called for, to promote further discussion?

Yes I can, because it is subjective. I can respect someones subjective opinion that is different from mine. I don't think less of Grieg as a person (or should I say, forum poster) because of his choice.

To me, it's just like a "which tank do you find more beautiful" post. If you find tank X to be more pleasing to the eye, and I find tank Y to be just that, why shouldn't I be able to say that tank X is ugly? ;)

Beauty, they say, is in the eye of the beholder.

Get it out with 'Optrex'! ;) :)

Let's create some new threads. Let me make a couple of suggestions....

    Beautiful tanks with ugly crew.

    Ugly tanks with beautiful crew.

The latter scantily clad, obviously. T.P.F.I.C.

In Griegs' defense, I also rank Full-Metal Jacket as a favorite. There are parts of that film--and soundtrack--that are absolutely haunting... I guess it helps to have been close to draft-age during that era.

If you're an R. Lee Ermey fan, theres also "The Siege of Firebase Gloria."

No-one has mentioned "Master and Commander" with Russell Crowe.

    Blade-Runner with Harrison Ford

Platoon... with the big battle at the end.
"We have Zips in the wire, I repeat, we have Zips in the wire."

    Saving Private Ryan.
If there has ever been a more convincing depecition of a landing on a hostile beach under fire... I haven't seen it. Shakey camera work and all.

Many, many movies come to mind, but that's a start.
