That's the one. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0266308/ There's no better way to summarize it than what you just wrote, and yet such a description doesn't do it justice in any way. When you read it you might expect a sadistic slaughterfest with shockingly young participants, a sort of Running Man for sociopathic teenage perverts and adult child-haters. That is not at all what this movie is about. Ultimately its tagline is the heart of the movie - "could you kill your best friend?" It's got a lot of black humour and misanthropy to it, certainly; however, its extreme violence serves only to underline the madness of its own premise. What matters is not this premise but the reactions of the students towards it. The movie never glorifies violence; in fact one of its major standpoints is that violence is always wrong. There's a couple of good movies being listed here by the way - The Shawshank Redemption is absolutely classic. IMDb's user favourite after The Godfather. The Untouchables, Tremors and Gallipolli are all very good.
I still stay with "The Rock". It even has a generation conflict. The old marines that only treathen to fire a missle with nerve gas on a city and the young generation that woud actually do it in order to get the ransom money. (I so hate those Kaptains Frye and Darrow) and some of the qoutes are just hillarious Nicolas cage: "I mean it, honey, the world is being Fed-exed to hell" (after dismantling a wooden crate with a chemical bom) About Ed Harris carracter: "Three tours in Vietnam, Panama, Grenada, Desert Storm; three Purple Hearts, two Silver Stars and the Congressional Medal of - Jesus." (So, never knew Jesus had a medal)
Roel. Suprised the Godfather was up there. Brilliant book. Rather mediocre film, I thought. Good books, especially long ones, never seem to make good films. Short books on the other hand...... Try "Holes".
I must be the only person who dosent like the godfather. Everyone loves and raves bout it, but i just never liked those osrt of mafia movies.
