It is good to know you still get excited at the finds that piece the stories together and that you don't just become jaded and blind to finding those little tidbits. I for one can just get excited at finding a good black and white image of those special days. The details of their dress, their equipment, and their attitudes just add more excitement for me. I do keep an eye out for pictures of someone I might recognize but so far it has only happened in my family collections, never from another source. But I will keep looking.

Carl, last year I went the my library's three dollar a bag used book sale. All by itself, I saw a military Catholic prayer book (a Missal).

I opened it, as it looked old, and found it belonged to a gentleman on the escort carrier USS Belleau Wood. I was thrilled to add it to my library, as I am a maritime/ Naval buff. Although I was very sad to think that it ended up at a book sale. To me that should have been kept in the family.

I wrote a letter to the address of the only person in town that had that last name, asking if they wanted it back if they were related, but didn't get ant response.

Oh well, I'll give it a good home!

    Hi Bel, Skipper, Victor, Darren,

Bel, to me it is ;-)) This is a "luck" purchase. I originally paid about $40 for this pic and now that it can positively and without any doubt be proven as to what Rgmt and Division this is a pic of as well as date-makes this pic easily worth 3X what I paid, maybe even more ;-)) The dealer I got this from I get "finds" like this once in awhile, the last two being one with an Waffen SS officer in it that Skipper I.D'ed, and another with General der. Kav. Eberhard von Mackensen in it. The seller didnt post in his description that the pic was one of a high-ranking General let alone a Knights Cross with Oaks hanging around his neck. I remember the caption read something like: "Officer inspects position on ridge. I easily made out he was a General then I automatically looked to see if he has any neck orders. This is the pic I originally thought was of Guderian as the way von Mackensen looked, he DID look like Guderian ;-))

Hi Vic, thanks and, this happens to me fairly often. I sometimes get great pics for next to nothing and when they come in, sometimes I notice some important things in them that the seller did not ;-)) As my interest range is huge, I know ill find more great pics in the future. Luckily for me, the seller cant take more time for more research on his wares as he has tons of them for sale every month. Luckily for me, I have some time I can put into looking at details. ;-)) Ill be on the "ball" concerning future auctions. I am developing a "good eye" when it comes to bidding on photos. For instance: unless I absolutely love an certain image, I flt out refuse to bid on photo postcards. This guy does not always seperate the post cards from the snapshot pics. I bought a few in the past but dont really regret it as they were great images. However, im able to spot certain important things that the seller does not-which is partly why I bid on even some of the mundand-or seemingly mundane images ;-)) Thats how I came across my "Leaping Horsemen" photo (24th Panzer Division) as well as some others ;-)) If your interested in getting any pics from one of my favorite sellers? just let me know. He also sells American pics from time to time too.

Thanks Skipper, and also glad you make finds too as I know you have an excelleny "eye" for certain things-which you have more than proven to me many times in the past as well as recently ;-))

Glad were in the same "boat" Darren, on havinga keen eye for certain things. I missed a chance to get a Holy Bible that was printed in the late 1700's-thanks to then lack of computer access. That edition went cheap and is easily worth a hundred times more than what was paid for an: "Old-somewhat tattered" old book.
