Do you know if any of the Newer Combat Mission games are worth the effort? Played and played the Normandy one in the past but last time I tried to get it to run on W10 no suggested fix would work, and I tried lots. I miss that game... EDT - I am wrong - 'Close Combat Normandy' is the name on dusty box I've dug out. What's closest to that of late? Played any of the new ones? Not cheap... mate of mine is bugging me to get Steel Division. Hmmm.
Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin Combat Mission: Afrika Korps The only ones worth it. The 'newer' ones, which cover both Modern and WW2 conflict, are more RTS than turn-based and I have found them harder to get into. The Close Combat series is a classic and I think only the newest of their games work on Windows 10. Steel Panthers is an alternative to Panzer Corps as well.
Yes two flavors...From an old post of mine. If those of you remember Steel Panthers, there are two free downloads that have updated the game. Steel Panthers World at War by Matrix Games: SPWaW FULL GAME and PATCHES - Download Links! and WinSPWW2 by Camo Workshop/Shrapnel Games: winSPWW2 Camo Workshop/Shrapnel Games have also updated Steel Panthers II Modern Battles(also a free download): winSPMBT: Main Battle Tank These games are also available for purchase, as IIRC, some things remain "locked" in the free downloads.
Matrix/Slitherine redid the Close combat series back in the 2011-20-teens, check the requirements though, there were some minor issues with Win10.
Lots of money for CC though. Too much really, even if I miss it so. Installed steel panthers for the first time in many years. Rush of nostalgia then realised I don't have patience for that clunky old UI any more. I've been spoilt by shiny things. And it used to look so... fresh. Another top game: Xcom. Played the original to death on Amiga or 386, then did the same on the reborn series. Cheap and good. Not gone for xcom2 yet. I'm a bottom feeder who works to the principle almost all games become less than a tenner in a year or so ... Crusader Kings 2. Want to watch your life evaporate over a week or so? Concerned about agnatic/cognatic primogeniture? Feel the holy Roman empire should have been holier, more Roman, and an actual empire? Like proper strategy games that take several days before you have a clue how they work? CK2 could be for you. (I'm actually a bit scared of it now. Days without sleep not entirely ideal.)
I think the OP is looking for WW2 Games. Up until Hearts of Iron 4, Paradox games (Crusader Kings 2, Europe Universalis series, Victoria II, etc) were quite good. Very in depth, some of them are still worked on with DLC but its not required for the complete gaming experience. Paradox have now switched over to a scheme of releasing 'broken' or 'incomplete' games (ie Hearts of Iron 4) where they cut parts out which they then put back in as $$-pay-for-DLC. Modders make better content (Kaiserreich Mod, for instance, for HOI 4) than the Developer now. How does a team of a few people with full time jobs complete something like Kaisserreich, while the people who are actually being paid to develop the game come up with crap during the same time period? Paradox is also taking some modded-content and repackaging it as DLC that they then make you buy. Thats why I don't recommend HOI 4 - sure, the graphics are great, but thats about it. HOI 3, especially running the BLACK ICE Mod, is by far the greater of the WW2 games they have released.
Meh, Ubisoft has long been in the release broken software category. I used to be a big fan of the Silent Hunter series, but Silent Hunter IV was the last Ubi purchase for me. They made us beg to release a final patch, and then added insult to injury by making us pay for it - It was a U-Boat add on disk with the final 4.something patch. Needless to say, having been quite feed up already, I dusted of my old piratical hat and hoisted the skull and bones. I would get their product, but they would not get my money. The mission was a great success. Modders made the SH community and Ubi ruined it. Never did play SHV. Heard it was abysmal on release, and you were limited to only the Type VII class. Totally lost interest in the series.
Ditto Takao...spent many hours playing silent hunter...early game had so much game play...kept expecting a better product but each new release was lesser than the last.
Sorry for the delay, I've been out of town and haven't had time to follow up on any of this. I wish there was a way to tell if it's indeed "Win 10S." The route to "Edition" that somebody helpfully provided above doesn't lead to an "Edition" on this computer. I'd hate to spend money on the "Pro" if I don't need it. It seems like every few years Microsoft feels the need to completely destroy their own system and force everyone to buy new software. .
Another go at this, from here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/13443/windows-which-operating-system Creates a popup. (This machine on 10 Home). If it's not clear (again, I don't do 10s) maybe screenshot it and we can have a shufti.
Splendid! So... I say: Use Steam - maybe buy cheap keys from assorted sources. (Though I don't imagine ones bought from cdkeys, green man, etc. will get that 2hr steam guarantee... I don't care in the couple of quid old game area.)
For those of you that used to enjoy the old Avalon Hill and SPI boardgames, Slitherine and Matrix games have a sale on right now for computerized board games. Matrix Games - Digital Boardgame Sales Week!
