My thoughts are based (almost entirely) off the taxi drivers here in Darwin...Lebanese, Egyptions etc...I talk to them about their countries and Israel comes up regularly and the venom regarding the place is interesting to say the least...it seems to me the average guy on the street still has issues on Israel...long way from forgotten and forgiven.

That's a rather biased sample though isn't it?

No... Do you take many cab rides LW...how do you take your samples?
Because cabs are the lowest denominator social commentators on the street.
Weird, how i notice a lot of the same comments by cab drivers here as well as those noted by CAC.

Buses are the lowest denominator social commentators on the street.

The lowest denominator social commentators can't afford cab fare.

Bus drivers are fairly well paid, and keep their nose' clean to keep their jobs.
Taxi's- usually connected one way or another.

I should have added that these 'taxi drivers' are doing degrees in engineering and such...

There are no solid evidence that the two hacker groups identified so far are connected with the Russian government, or that they are Russians.
Both groups have existed for at least 8 years, and are well known all around the world for their hacking efforts.
The main evidence is that there are some Russian words in their viruses, and "in Russia nothing happens without the government" which of course is nonsense.
They say the emails were leaked mainly because Podesta clicked on a link with a virus on his (unsecured - without antivirus software) computer, and that virus stole his password to his email account. It's something even a child playing Club Penguin wouldn't do.

More accurate to say no solid evidence has been revealed to the public. Whether it exists is an open question. That the hacker groups are originating from Russian IP addresses is pretty strong evidence they are Russian and the fact that they are still in business after 8 years rather implies at least some connection to the Russian government at some level. Again more evidence may and almost certainly does exist but has not yet and may never be revealed.

Certainly, but the computer forensics investigation at the DNC was conducted by the security firm CrowdStrike and basically nobody else, they released all their findings on their web site.
No hacker uses his own ip addresses for hacking purposes, as rule he uses encryption, hides behind a long chain of owned computers spanning multiple countries, or uses a distributed botnet to do his bidding. Those people are so sure of their anonymity that they are bragging of their exploits on public discussion forums.

A professional organization with an access to serious money would change their tools and modus operandi every few years - to hide their identity better and confuse its opponents. Those two didn't.

    And then this:

HANNITY: Can you say to the American people, unequivocally, that you did not get this information about the DNC, John Podesta's emails, can you tell the American people 1,000 percent that you did not get it from Russia or anybody associated with Russia?

JULIAN ASSANGE: Yes. We can say, we have said, repeatedly that over the last two months that our source is not the Russian government and it is not a state party.

It's not at all clear that CrowdStrike was the sole entity conducting the investigation. From what I recall reading there were government entities interested in the events before CrowdStrike was hired.

No need to hide your identity all that much if you are protected by the government of the country you reside in either.

Then there's the question of how much you could trust Assange if the people that gave him were criminals working for the Russian government or individuals in the Russian government Assange's statement would be correct but misleading as well. Much of the hacking/cyber war attacks coming out of Russia appears to be at the very least inspired and condoned by the Russian government in some cases it even appears to be financially supported by them but the individuals conducting it are not technically in the Russian government.

All governments are into hacking if they have the technology and clout and the West cannot take the moral high ground. It is the age of the Cyber War. We have no idea what the UK and USA governments are up to. Shady characters in the spying game are old hat now. Just recruit the cleverest computer nerds and use the information to your advantage, causing mayhem in the process. As plebs, our dilemma is whether to believe our own government or alleged hacked information from a foreign power.

I don't see it so much of a moral high ground issue is that as a world power the US cannot afford to let other powers get away with exerting serious covert pressure on our elections. Info gathering is one thing but this gets into the area of a direct attack.

"Gentlemen don't read other gentlemen's mail."

Therefore it's okay to read Putin's.

Governments never admit their spying activities because it exposes them to reprisals - which can't be responded in kind effectively if you admitted your guilt.

entirely unproven covert pressure we could say.

The new American government will be one of the strongest in recent history. Trump has House, Senate, 33 of 50 state governorships behind him. The people he has chosen so far for his cabinet seems to be professional and strong-willed. From the point of view of a potential American adversary this is a development straight from a horror movie.
This really can't be good for Russia or other wannabe global player. It's hardly believable Putin wanted this. From his point of view Congress and the president constantly deadlocked over issues would be ideal - so he would vote Clinton.

Whether or not it's good for Putin and Russia or others depends on how Trump's aims align with his. If he thinks he can "play" Trump then it's exactly what he wants. Whether or not he can is an open question. He certainly wasn't going to be able to do as well with Hillary.

It should be mentioned, I think, that the Russian economy is 18 times smaller than the American economy. 10 times than the Chinese economy. In total 11 countries are richer than Russia, including Brazil and South Korea.
Per person Russia is almost a third world country, behind Lebanon and Malaysia, occupying 64 place.
Russia is not an economic threat, and not a military threat (with its single rusty aircraft carrier with crashing planes).
The US doesn't need Russia for anything, and if Trump restarts arms race - China can take it, Russia will be crushed like a bug.

Russia has no allies, and she should thank God every day that the Chinese still don't "remember" which one of the unequal treaties hasn't been reversed yet. And for the Chinese the unequal treaties are like Pearl Harbor, only ten times worse.

Any country with nuclear weapons is a military threat. Some things are certainly more difficult without Russian participation/help so yes the US does need Russia. To say Russia has no allies is hardly correct either. They have a number of them. How reliable they are and for what is a bit more complex but they are certainly there.
