Great pic & great read Martin My friend at work was close to buy one last week & was telling me that the Russian refurbish loads of the guns after the war & did not make a good job of it
That's true, I'm afraid. The Soviet refurbs were generally quite rough ( this applies to other weapons, such as Luger pistols, too ). OTOH, the Yugoslavian arsenals worked to much higher standards ; their 'blueing' in particular being very good.....
Great picture Martin! A variant of the now and then pictures. Actually the other one could be restored. I have a friend who does this. He once found a LEBEL rifle in a well in a worse condition and now it looks great.
Nice! Got one myself! i'll show it off to I now got a K98k & a Luger! German weapons, because i've others too (Belgian, Brittish..)
In my opinion thats destroying history... I really can't stand people who do this kind of stuff. The relic was thrown away 60 years ago... its old.. not new. The complete story of what a dugup relic could "tell" you is simply lost in this way. @ Martin, nice K98, I think the bleuing is done after the war but still a nice one. I myself prefer to have a 100% matching one who is in the same condition as back than... cost a little bit more... but thats not a problem for me, I will pay good money for a 100% good item. Regards, Nick
In the UK these days, a BIG bit more ! It's now very difficult indeed to find really good late-war K98s ( I should have bought five years earlier ), so I'm happy to have my 'look-alike' even though as you quite rightly say, it's re-worked ( albeit very nicely ). As for the relic, I agree - I've left it 'as found' and sold to me by a German dealer at the Beltring Fair in 2002. When I got it home, it still had a live round in the breech ( ) the propellant of which which I very carefully cleaned out - the bullet itself is still in there.....
