The facts are that of the countries listed, Poland, France, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Yugoslavia, and Greece, ALL except for France were militarily inferior in regards to men, equipment, weapons, tactics, leadership and morale. And from the time the Allies landed in Europe in Jun 1944 to May 1945 it took less then "years" to get them back. But That has nothing to do with the orignal subject of the demodernization of the German Wehrmacht as the war ground on and how it was not at all mechanized as German propaganda lead everyone to believe.

An oddity with relevance to this thread is that I have been almost entirely unable to unearth any... literally any.... photographs of German construction machinery. I found a line drawing of a horse drawn road grader and a couple of photos of road rollers but nothing else. Opel apparently did make a dump truck version of the Blitz truck but I have never seen a photo of it.
It seems this was an area of mechanization that was virtually unknown to the German military. Their mechanized equipment for construction seems non-existant.

That is something Ive noticed before. Thanks for bringing that up. Most of the times I have seen things like bridges being built there are always just hand tools and engineers and other troops around.

I wonder how they would have felt about being forced to use bikes and horses so much.

bikes and horses/mules were better than carrying the stuff on your back and marching on hobnail boots.

Some I have had collected and saved for awhile . Some I use the ole Google-Fu LOL. I was going to mention that unlike bicycles and other vehicles horses could not be as easily repaired or fixed with spare parts.

I also forgot the aspect of hearing the sounds of the wounded horses. Most accounts state that the screams and sounds were almost human :(.

I wonder if they would rather have been riding horses or bicycles in the snow?
