Harbor at Finschhaven (back of picture stamped "NOT to be mailed - U.S. Censor") so I guess it's okay to post?
Interesting Thread, Thanks for posting I have now subscribed. It feels weird to see those pictures on the internet since i saw them personally
Biak, There is a story in the February Flight Journal magazine about Lt. Chuck Harmon of the 348FG/342FS ditching in the Philippines that might interest you...
Thanks for the heads-up. Do you have a link? I'd like to read it but my "Google" search came up short. Still waiting for the 2 disc set on the 348th I ordered from AFHRA which should have much more than the Unit history I have.
Unfortunately, they didn't put that article online. Its the current issue which should still be available on the newstand.
Thanks! I'll be in what is considered a "City" up here next week and I'll see if I can find a copy. Much appreciated.
I was thinking about putting these in a new thread but decided to keep it all together. Everyone must start somewhere, this is where a few of the 348th Fighter Group pilots began their odyssey. I noticed the names are not that easily seen: Student Officers Peterson, Henry D. _ Luchini, Joseph W. _ Jacobi, William W. _ Ralston, William A. Robison, Ivy R. _ Theus, Harold C. _ Brunson, Robert T. _ Chambers, William J. Frost, Robert E. _ Claytor, Roy F. _ Kutger, Joseph P. _ Malady, Myron M. McCauley, Robert J. _ McCrady, William S. _ Moon, Richard H. Moore, Albert L. Jr. _ Olsen, Howard P. _ Wright, Henry W. Batallion J.G. Davis Cadet Captain _ T.H. Brown Cadet Adjutant A-Flight H.C. Goodell Captain _ R.E. Elkins Lieutenant _ G.L. Woodruff Lieutenant B-Flight W.L. Faver Captain _ W.B. Henderson Lieutenant _ W. Wooten Lieutenant
I think the pictures make a perfect complement to your history. Thanks for the whole process and keep us updated as you learn more.
Christmas just keeps on a-coming! Received the CD from AFHRA yesterday and the amount of info is more than I expected. Most enclosures appear to be included: listing bombing missions, tonnage dropped, ammunition expended, accidents/losses, fuel consumption, personnel (mostly HQ), airfield moves, (the ones posted below are the main HQ bases), and other incidentals. After the end of hostilities the monthly reports became more detailed and from November '45 to January '46 the number of personnel moving through the 348th Fighter Group is staggering. How is the quality of the images on the CD? I have heard mixed reviews from others about the CDs. I have several reels of 16mm microfilm of the records of my father's bomb group, and the quality varies greatly on the microfilm, from excellent on some portions to illegible on others. I need to complete my set, and would like to get the remaining records on CD as finding a reader to view the microfilm is a real pain.
Great stuff Biak, how could I have missed all this great stuff? It will take some time to read it all but what I read I really like and the illustrations are nice additions.
Actually the quality is not that bad. For the most part There are a few 'glitches'; one page is folded over on a corner covering half a paragraph, one folder which only had three pictures of SWPA Islands, shows what appears as a dark negative. Other than that the readability is pretty good. Not bad out of nearly 300 or so pages. I would definitely order the CD. I'll be doing it again for two other relatives who were in the ETO. Contact AFHSA ; Welcome to Muir S. Fairchild Research Information Home Page The folks there have been more than helpful. Thanks Skipper!
Back to the beginning. (still experimenting with how to get a good scan, so bear with me) Original members of the 348th Fighter Group
I'm not exactly sure when the picture was taken but here is the 341st Squadron. Best guess is mid Summer 1944 on Wakde.
