Actually happened, some Soviet general came up with the brilliant idea to train dogs to associate the undersides of tanks with food. Charges with contact fuses were then strapped on the dogs backs and you had a primitive guided missile. Unfortunately T-34's were used in the training, and instead of a small scale trial, in the first operation thousands of these "bombs" were released. Naturally the dogs prefered the Soviet tanks and an entire tank corps was forced to retreat to save their tanks.

Wonder how the Soviet General felt ? ?

German soldiers tell of wiring grenades together to form a type of satchel charge particularly usefull against the T-34 which had overhang at the rear of the turret. You jammed the charge underneath the overhanging portion. Teller mines were used frequentlt as well.

In Franz Kurowski's Infantry Aces there are numerous accounts related.

    Thanks Roel. :)

I first heard of this on a TV documentary back in the mid 90's host by Peter Ustinov called "military blunders" or something like that. I wasn't sure if I had remembered it right.

THE BEST WAY WAS TO MAKE THE CREW PURPOSELY DESTROY IT THEN ABANDON IT.

Apparently you hadn't logged in. I didn't know it was possible at all to post without being logged in. Ah well.

The best way to destroy a Tiger was indeed probably to force it to move a lot; in the end its huge fuel consumption and great size would bring it into awkward positions, possibly forcing the crew to abandon it.

Take a look at page 38-40 In the book 'M4 -Sherman' Michael Green:
'From the book 'Tanks are mighty fine things' a british tanker in Burma wrote :
in a recent actin a jap officer climbed on the back of a tank (Sherman) and struck the commander with sword killing him instantly. He then entered the tank and killed the gunner with his sword. the radioman/loader fired his revolver but manged only to wound the jap. the two fell to the floor of the of the turret in hand to hand combat. the radioman/loader managed to grab the revolver of the dead gunner and finally killed the enemy officer'

The jap must have been a very nimble and brave man !

But five men and a revolver in a tank are mightier than the sword!

Seriously. I wonder how the Japanese officer managed to get both himself and his sword inside the tank without breaking either.

God, I hate the Katana and all these BS hyped out stories centered around it. The short answer is that this isn't possible. There isn't enough room in a Sherman for a Katana (or any sword for that matter) to be flailed about as described in this article.
