Well if you want to expierence a little of what we're going through right now, just put yourself in your freezer for about 5 minutes.. then put a fan in there have it blowing at full speed. actually considering how hot it is over there, you might find that refreshing!

Snowing again. I am beginning to think this is Mother Nature spiting me on purpose. Tomorrow I'm buying either a plow truck or a flame thrower.

You ought to make a few extra bucks doing some snow plowing out there. Should be a pretty good sized cottage industry these days.

Too many people doing it. Everybody with a truck has a plow on it, seems like. I looked at getting a plow package on my new truck, but it would have cost more than buying a POS to plow with. I have decided to go for the flame thrower....less to break. Plus, really snowblowing isn't that bad...gets me some alone time. I can listen to my music and what not....a good break in the day.

We had a few inches of snow the other day and it has been much colder than normal. It was in the mid-teens this morning and only got up to 30 today. I know this isn't anything compared to what you guys in the north are getting, but I hate this. I jokingly told my wife that we should move to Florida and she said that she would move anywhere I want to go after our daughter graduates from Vanderbilt in another year. You know....with my parents gone and no other family in this area, I'm going to think VERY hard about the Florida thing.

Southern winters are much worse. No plows, salt, sand, or common sense. At least up here people are like, "Well hell I'll just take an extra 40 minutes to go someplace."

You are correct, Luke. Mys son grew up here in Pennsylvania, where we have had some interesting snows over the years. He went to college at Clemson, South Carolina, and he called one day to tell us that the University was closed because they had 3 inches of snow and no way to clear it off the hills at the school. He thought it was hilarious, especially when the University allowed the students to borrow cafeteria trays to use as sleds. Obviously, some of the kids had never seen snow, while my son was amazed at the panic that occurred.

You reminded me of a time once when I was driving OTR, and a "snow storm" (LOL) hit Amarillo TX. There were cars and trucks off the road, sliding through intersections, running into each other in parking lots, and just generally behaving like a bunch of un-guided pinballs on the road.

I filled up with diesel and left the area post-haste. Drove west and the snow disappeared, the drivers knew what to do in the little snow they had received, and everybody on the CBs was just laughing their butts off about Amarillo.

But then again, even here in Montana it seems like the first snow of the season always catches a few with their pants down as to awareness of the less traction on the roads. Takes about a week for everybody to get back into "winter mode" or something. If I go to the grocery store on the first day of a first storm I take the side and back streets as much as possible, because without fail you will see somebody come "boiling up" to a stop sign or light and just go sliding through, or at least well into the intersection. The looks on their faces are priceless!

6 inchs of ice on my womans bird fountain, freezing rain the last two days, right now 26F, freezing fog the streets are covered with Verglas ice, not black ice as incorrectly termed by the weather clowns. you can imagine the accidents and the probs the police and ambulance crews are facing here .......... busted pipes, fires within homes ............ tis the season and it is still Fall

The term black ice is used to indicate when roads are covered in a film of ice that you cannot tell is there (being that it sort of blends in with the color of the road) unlike now where the road is snow covered and that obviously means they are slick. At least that's the case here in Michigan.

We don't have that stuff because we have no real need for any of it. In my lifetime, we've had maybe 3 or 4 appreciable snow episodes and usually the worst of it was over in a day or so. It is just not cost effective to purchase all that equipment and special tires and chains when they will be useless by the time you get them on. It is just cheaper to close everything down for 24-48 hours.

I've seen those videos of cars piling up in bad snow and ice conditions up there. Is it less of matter a lack of common sense or more a lack of exposure to such weather conditions? A person tends to treat something differently when he is accustomed to it. I am pretty sure that if we had snow that lasted for more than a day on a regular occasion, then driving habits would adjust to the conditions.

the term black ice is thus. road crew rock and cleansing materails moving into the pavement giving the street the black look with a thin covering of ice. the term from freezing sub standard temps is from cold frozen air droplets-ice and black ice, something that supposedly you cannot see. silver thaw comes to mind, everything is frozen silver on the roofs, roads you name it right now. We have used black ice as a tech term in alpine ice climbing back in the 1970's when the rock as being exposed from freeze-thaw is opened eroding down with the ice. Its is a terrible mix on our Glaciers during the summer here in Orygun and on Mt. Shasta since who knows wheln, and with first hand experience in the Mtns it is difficult to place an ice tool for climbing purposes as it is like climbing on concrete

And it's -30C here right now - feels like -45C or -31F feels like -49F!!!! Hopefully, they're right and by the 18th -1C, because 2 continuous weeks of this Arctic deep freeze is more than enough at one time!!

Not a lot of snow, yet; but I expect we'll see some good snowstorms again in January....

Well, the weather here in the crack between Ohio and Indiana is below or at freezing. But the temperature is supposed to be in the 50s on Monday. Weird weather but i'll take it. On Tuesday we are supposed to be hit with more snow and ice. Like the snow hate the ice unless no one else is out driving.

Yeah, and how would areas that usually get pounded with snow on a regular basis deal with a hurricane? And just a low level Cat 1 at that?

One of the things I remember about C & F is that -40 is the same temperature on both scales. Dang cold if you ask me.

It has rained here all day, temp in the mid 30s. Just a raw day. The cold crawls in through the gaps in your clothes no matter what.

I've never been exposed to temps less than 5 F in my life, if you don't count that suspect "wind chill factor" thing. Of course, 20 F is still cold if you soaked through and through on a tractor, wind or no wind.

That was my point, as far as the not having plows and what not. Obviously you don't need them. In 2000, in Knoxville we had a 4 inch snow storm...now that doesn't sound like much but 4 inches of snow on the road, unplowed, rutted up by traffic, is dangerous. Me? 30mph down the highway, other cars? 75 and up, trying to get out of the weather faster. THAT is the lack of common sense part. It doesn't matter how used to or not used to weather you are....thats just plain nonsense. I saw the same thing in Atlanta once too...that was even scarier.

I ran into town tonight to grab my wife's prescription and my own. (Her's comes in pill form I got mine in 12oz bottle form) and I experienced what I call...black ice. The road was wet, due to a slight warm up this afternoon melting some of the snow. Three deer bolted out in front of me. I have no idea how I missed them or by how much because I closed my eyes to brace for impact while attempting to slow down. I hit, whatever you call it, and slide the truck, which when it started to slide I decided best to open my eyes and check stuff out...and did a 90 degree turn which I was able to recover from and put it back in my own lane. Luckily no cars coming...and no deer hit! I cringe to think of the damage that would have been done to the truck I've had for a month.
