OK, no takers in a week. If no-one has a guess by tomorrow, I'll put up a new question.

    Final clue. Nevil Shute Norway.

I think I have out-impossibled all of you

    The answer:

Nevill Shute Norway (the author of On the Beach etc) served in the RNVR as a member of the Admiralty Department of Miscellaneous Weapons Development (DMWD, aka the Wheezers and Dodgers). One of the inventions he was involved in was the "Great Panjandrum", a giant rocket propelled wheel designed to run up a beach and drop a ton of HE onto a suitable obstacle. The results were not quite up to specifications -- the film is very funny, with the cameraman running from the out-of-control Panjandrum. The name came from the poem by Samuel Foote where the Great Panjandrum has "gunpowder running out of his heels". Testing happened at Birnbeck Pier, at Westward Ho!

    OK, an easier "impossible" question

    "Chatfield, there seems ..."
Complete the quotation and tell me who said it, under what circumstances

    Ah-ha!

You need to press your foot (shoe) down hard - and Khruschev rather famously put his shoe down hard at the UN...

Actually this guestion would fit nicely to that "Humour, best medicine" -thread.

A hint: What kind of sound does car engine make when you try to start it after cold night?

    Ricky, CSP: no

hahnficken: Quite close. With more battery you might get "NIKITA NIKITA NIKITA..."
And when that engine finally starts up, how does it sound at that precise moment it starts?

    Ok, as nobody is interested:

sound when trying to start cold engine:

    NIKITANIKITANIKITANIKITA

    And when it finally starts:

    KHRUSCHEV!

    Hence:
    Nikita Khruschev.

Fastest one can ask next question.
