Wittmann died where he did mostly because of his own tactical ineptness. Just as at Villers Brocage before where he narrowly escaped death, Wittmann was attacking a Canadian position at his final battle with just a handful of Tigers. He had no artillery or infantry support with him. He had little knowledge of his opponet's position, strength, etc.
Attacking with a small force devoid of support but aggressively handled might work in Russia where Wittmann learned his trade but, in the West this was a receipe for disaster. Wittmann might have also believed in the Tiger myth of invincibility too to at least a degree.
Leading with your face with an unknown opponet is a pretty sure way to an early grave in warfare.

 

Show me where the American soldiers were trained to wage "ruthless war". That we committed "war crimes" is not in dispute. The US certainly was no innocent.

(As an aside, ask our veterans about how they were trained. I am willing to bet they would take issue with your statement that they were trained to wage "ruthless war". They had rules to follow)

But it wasn't the US who started the war, who invaded other countries, who place MILLIONS in concentration camps. How were the Germans able to murder millions in Poland ? It only happened because the Germans invaded and occupied Poland. That was an illegal act that had no moral basis for happening. Hence, they are criminals because the war was itself illegal by international standards.

I am criticizing both while at the sametime trying to acknowledge the skill and bravery of both.

We are talking about Germany and WWII here, not other wars. SO your point is irrelevant to the discussion at hand.

I am all for the veterans sharing their experiences and opinions. This is a free world we live in. The punishment for Germany's behavior has been meted out. I certanly do not condon ostracizing them if for no other reason than that they represent history. They have much to say that we could learn from.

Any person who wants them to remain silent should be kindly told to hush. That is history that must be told.

 

The intimidation did not occurr until AFTER the Nazis took office. The numbers I am speaking of are before they took office.The Nazis had borad appeal throughout Germany.

Germany all throughout the 30's was building towards war. They didn't just one day decide to wage war and draft millions. They had been planning this from the beginning.

How could people not know? There was literally hundreds of thousands involved the process of genocide. Furthermore, the Einsatzkommando followed right on the heels of the Heer. Are you seriously suggesting that they had no contact at all with the Heer?


And this does not matter much anyways for it was the illegal war that paved away for the capture, imprisonment, and destruction of European Jewry.No war, no Holocaust.

Getting back to Wittmann all I have seen here indicates just another case of 'Wehrmacht penis envy'.
