    I concur!

The Kurds asking for Turkish independence or Syrian or Iranian is similar to Chechnya asking for Russian. I dont see it happening.

Dissolving a country and breaking it up into several pieces just because a certain people cant live with each other is not always the best solution...... But these days seems to be the easiest one. There also seems to be a double standard in this solution as certain countries support the break aways of one but not others.....

For such a move to occur, would set a precendent for other to happen. ;)

it is a strange thing friend but my remarks were concerning back at an earlier age when the Kurds to the north in Iraq were being pulverized, almost as an experimental pig on a spit if you will by Saddam. More than once they wanted to with outside assistance wanted to drive right into the Babylonian heart of Baghdad ans string up Saddam, and I feel they should of been supported and run through the whole area in search of the evil one and his command structure. I could easily Identify with the ones I was at close hand with as they are and were a crazy lot, such as me............so in this light yes they should of struck out for their own independence and maybe just maybe they would of left everyone else in the region alone. It is still quite the unsettled area.

Just playing the devil's advocate here, but isn't that more or less what happened in 1991 in the Soviet Union and 1993 in Czechoslavakia?

Erich I more or less agree, but then any minority could ask for independce in any country and there would probably be far less supporters for this scenario. I have also good kurdish friends and I clearly make a distinction between civilians and the PKK. The problem is that some kurdish kids think of this faction as a romantic band of freedom fighters and that's wrong.

my statement should bring some sneers from the public; as to comment to your last sentence it reminds me of young youthful Palestinians who gave me the eye of death in Jerusalem besides those that wanted to support Hammas in Jordon. I look back at those times for me some 20 plus years ago........yes it was creepy and it paid to have eyes to the back of your head all the time.

the age of copying one another has not changed whether the idea is real or an ideal

The Soviet Union anology would be incorrect as the Soviet Union was not a country but 14 countries together.....

    Czechoslavakia on the other hand.........

Yugoslovia and the current situation with Kosovo would be better ;)

Correct me if I'm wrong but there has never been a Kurdistan, so why why dismantle several countries and make them bitter for a long time to create an artificial entity with people who come from different cultures and don't speak the same language.

The right for a people to rule their own fate, I'm ok with this.

But isn't it already the case if this people is part of a democratic country, and does not suffer from any kind of political, social or economical apartheid ?

Ok, but what about the case where they are or were so much opressed that they just can no longer feel like belonging to a country whose history equals opression, murders, and discrimination to them ?
You can't force them to forgive or forget, it takes centuries for this.

Ok, but what about the will to have an homogenous country populated with people belonging to the same ethnic/religious group ? Isn't this the road to a "pure / cleansed nation" concept ? How do you expect they will themselves treat their minorities with such a mentality ?

Ok, but why Irakis Kurds and not Turkish Kurds ?
Why Slovenians and not Palestinians ?
Why Croatians and not Corsicans ?
Why Americans and not Tibetans ?
why Ukrainians and not Chechens ?
Why Bosnians and not Kosovars ? etc etc

    I don't know.

De jure, they may have been fourteen, de facto, they were one.

((((No apologise needed. What I meant (in other words of course ;-)) was that if Roosevelt caved in to the kind of thinking that is happening currently, then it is very doubtful that America could have helped participate in the winning of WWII. ;-)))))

The initial goal was to restaure democracy in Iraq, not slice the country into pieces to please the kurds and the Chiites.

Well, I would not say "the initial goal", I'd rather say "the only serious goal left" anyway...

If it's a democracy, it's up to them to decide, don't you think ?

The situation today is enough a consequence of decisions made by western powers about what Iraq should be as a country, maybe it's time to stop deciding for them ?

Of course, once it's a sovereign democracy, it's up to them and not foreigners to decide whether they split or not.

But with the actual violence, I doubt both Iraq is close to be a functional democracy, and its communities willingly cohabit in the same country.

And the fact western powers have been using minorities as a lever to weaken S. Hussein's power does not help.

Maybe a very loose federation ?

I hope a federal system will work, I don't see any other acceptable solution at the time being.

Yep, it might be a reasonable "go-between"

At least Iraq's integrity would be preserved. A strong IRAQ facing Iran may be useful in the future. Not that I wish that those countries start another war, but I really don't think that we need a Liberia in the middle aest with jigsawing parts of a kurdistan together.
