These are the top vote getters from the movies that were nominated in the other thread. I did not choose them, all who voted did. The Pianist got nomination votes.

It was a TV movie (a mini-series) and it got votes in the nomination thread, so I included it.

So much for this request, I guess I go move the other threads I had already moved back to here.

EDIT---I was being snotty with the last line, apologies to all, please.

Of the list provide, I chose 'Das Boot'. Can't beat it for accuracy. Cross of Iron came really close. Band of Brothers was good but still had the 'hollywoodish' feeling about it plus I really don't like anything linked with Ambrose. Stalingrad would have been another one I would have liked to have seen in the poll as well as 'El Alamein'.

When I watch a movie it is primarily for entainment, not accuracy. While I applaud Hollywood's efforts in this area, and believe me in some cases they did astoundingly well...the first 20 minutes of Private Ryan on Ohama Beach were rending, and Das Boot was very accurate this alone is no reason for rating the movie successful.
The story, its meaning, and the way it is told are all critical to the success of a movie.
Accuracy also has its limits. Hollywood still has to film the movie and there is a need for dialogue.
I would also say you should really watch some of the stuff made back in the 50's. There is a whole different mindset in those movies.

What was so bad about The Pianist ? It had some good combat in it and was historical.

I think you are a person of little culture and dequorum. If Larry the Cable Guy did a WWII film then you say it was a masterpiece. :D:p:D

I vote for Das Boot but all the others were good movies also.

Hi TA, I thought it was as boring as watching paint dry and or, as boring as Shindler's List, was - whichever is the more boring of the two?

Yessir I sure did. Both were a struggle to watch what I did without fast-forwarding through some of the scenes. These movies I place on the same level as The Red Line. Pearl Harbor at least had some great action scenes-otherwise it too would be on the same level as the previous mentioned movies.

It's a shame y'all can't all be perfect like me.

It was hard for me, also. I just made myself think that they were drawing most of it from Parachute Infantry, by David Kenyon Webster, which essentially it was, considering that Ambrose "borrowed" heavily from that book when writing his

Most of my favorites were made then. Mister Roberts, Battleground, The Caine Mutiny and From Here To Eternity.

I really enjoyed Schindler's List. I approached it from the story they were trying to tell not the action and doing my miniscule part to honor the sacrifice that the people portrayed in the movie endured. I've not seen The Piano, I guess I need to.

Day of Days, for Band of Brothers won by a nose over Das Boot, and Saving Private Ryan, in that order.

Band of Brothers is stretching out it's lead, which is interesting. It was not the top vote getter in the nomination thread, SPR was, with Downfall close behind. And to honest with you, I was loathe to put Kelly's Heroes in it, I just so greatly dislike that film.

Well I like Battleground 1949, the movie stands the test of time and epitomizes Willie and Joe.

Saving Private Ryan fell apart after the beach scene and I didn't buy the holding the SS with nothing part of the Bridge Scene. The infantry would make contact and get ambushed pull back and let arty (The stug42, that blasted the church tower, clean out the paras.) Then if a couple of p47s flew by and rocketed the crap out of the SS grenadiers then it would be more realistic.

Band of Brothers was good but we might be comparing apples with oranges.

The Great Escape was probably the best classic with acceptable acting.

Cross of Iron had the best director and was a good movie

Das Boot and Downfall were good as well

Kelly's Heroes was more of a comedy which I would put in the same category as Von Ryan's Express the latter being the better movie

Longest Day and In Harm's way both good John Wayne films but I also like They Were Expendable but the acting level is on par with Batlle of the Bulge, mediocre at best.

I liked The Battle of Britain

Although I haven't seen the Pianist, if it was a good war movie it would be in my DVD collection and it ain't. I'm guessing it is a Holocaust genre movie, like the one with the Italian actor that was a little too excited, Roberto, I forget his name(Roberto Benigni) I'm am not a fan of Roman Polansky, but am a fan of his deceased wife, Sharon Tate. As well as not being an attractive leading man, Adrien Brody is annoying and can't act his way out of a paper bag. Was this a rip off of Night of the Generals? Hollywood is greedy and lazy and hasn't produced much quality recently.;)

However, to be fair, I will rent the movie and give it a review later.:)

If we are going in different more broad directions then I like The Odessa(Organisation der ehemaligen SS-Angehörigen) file, Jon Voight's only good film.

Of the list I would have to say Band of Brothers only because it was both good and there was more to see.

If you are looking for major battles and action then you will be disappointed in the Pianist. It is about a Jewish concert piano player in Poland trying to survive the Germans. There is some action but not thru out the whole movie.

The Pianist won't be a problem for me. My favorite "war" film has not fighting in at all, unless you count the argument between Captain Morton and Mister Roberts.

    BoB.

The first war movie I ever saw. I must have seen it a good 100 times.
