"Mein Kampf" was very nearly a flop and a big embarrassment for Hitler. What if ?

    Agreed.

I would advice anyone thinking about reading this book to forget unless you want to wast hundreds of hours on the ramblings of a mad man.

Too my embarrassment I did.

Too true Martin & Richard, no insight or interest in the entire turgid moan.

    Cheers,
    Adam.

Even at the time he gave his speeches, and before knowing what crimes he'll do, it was easy to see the emptiness of his imprecations.

It was also very easy at this same time, with some distance, to catch how ridiculous were the postures and decorum used by Hitler in his speeches, see the Dictator movie by Chaplin for example.

I think it's only hindsight that makes it easy Choca, from a contemporary German's perspective, and bearing in mind the instabilities & problems in that country, I think, like Roddoss, I'd have been taken in too.

Just reading Henry Mettelmann's 'Through hell for Hitler', it fits Roddoss's suggestion perfectly. Mettelmann's an obviously intelligent young man, very thoughtful about the rights and wrongs of the world, yet still willingly goes to fight for the Reich, happy to absorb the propaganda and spout the slogans. It takes a long period of horrible war to finally make him see through Goebbels's smokescreen.

    Cheers,
    Adam.

Well of course, I'm not talking for myself.
Maybe I would have been the naziest nazi in naziland.

I agree it was more a matter of culture, education and social position, that could make one adhere to Hitler show.

And if you were German, or if you were a bit antisemitic, or a bit nationalist, or if you had a revenge to take on your own life, or if you were inclined to blame your problems on other people, you were potentialy a good customer for Hitler.

I just disagree on the time factor : in my example, the Dictator movie was made in 1940 IIRC, so at the same very time when Hitler moved the crowds with his speeches and shows, Chaplin was making fun of his postures and pyrotechnic oratory style.

It did not take 5 or 10 years to Chaplin to capture Hitler's style as a speaker, and turn him ridiculous.

The one thing that i have learned and that to understand the man you have to get an insight into his psychie and that reading Mein Kampf is a must, it is too easy to not read the book and without understanding his view on history distorted as they were fobb him off. Yes the book may have flopped but even after all these years people such as myself were prepared to purchase a copy of it. It is just as relevant today as it was back in the 30's and 40's.

People joke that Mein Kampf would make a wonderful door stop, but had people understood that "wonderful doorstop" and rose up against Hitler and the Nazis maybe 50,000,000 lives would not have been ended in the wholistic scene of WWII.

What can you do with only 2 accounts nowadays.

You need at least 5 of them, in order to raise your own reputation at an interesting rate :D

Anyways, I just meant that the ridiculous decorum and bad tragedy actor could be felt in Hitlers speeches at the very time these speeches were made.

This does not mean we can allow ourself to underestimate this part of human nature, were thousands if not million people just line up behind a jerk just because he pressed the right "hate, anger, envy and frustration" buttons at the right time.

The ugly beast whithin never dies, at best, it's only sleeping.

Famous quote from a Star Trek "we are all Za, we conquer and we will add you uniquness to our collective". Ok they meant "Borg", but the Borg and Za are one of the same thing.
