That is certainly a .50 Browning.

Excellent photos of the Cambrai trip, Ian - made me want to get my boots on..... ;)

A World War Two pillbox in a Roadwater garden has been restored to its former glory, disguised to look like a garden building.

The official ceremony dedicating the uncovering of a First World War tank took place at Flesquieres on the afternoon of Friday 20th November 1998, the 81st anniversary of the Battle of Cambrai.

Located just on the outskirts of Flesquieres village, it is a Mark IV Female. The guns were not in situ and the tank had taken a direct hit below the driver's compartment. Interior damage was minimal, and both sponsons intact. The rear of the tank was in particular good condition with the crew door still partly open. Even the exhaust was still there!

Cultybraggan looks like alot of the other camps that are still in use, would be interesting to find out what these places once did...

Well, inevitably, despite a petition to 10 Downing Street, officialdom has reached a decision about the historic buildings at RAF Northolt.

    Tear 'em all down.

Yes, I nearly put my foot through my own monitor as well when I read it, Martin.
    Democracy, anyone?

Saturday 26th May will see the 4th University College London/ IWM conference on Materialities & Cultural Memory of 20th Century Conflict at the IWM, entitled Conflict Landscapes; Materiality & Meaning in Contested Places 1900-2007. It runs from 9am-5pm.
Topics covered are as diverse as WW1 landscapes in Flanders, WW2 ones in Sussex, Gallipoli, internment camps on the IoM and murals at RAF Coltishall. Speakers come from a wide background, but I don't have a link unfortunately.
You will probably get details direct; www.iwm.org.uk

It is planned to demolish a listed pillbox in Gomshall, Surrey. The planning application number is 07/P/00687 and can be accessed online at this site:- http://www.guildford.gov.uk/acolnet/

Comments must be made by the 14th May. The local parish council had objected. If at least 10 objections are received it must go before a full planning committee, rather than being decided by a case officer alone.

    PLEASE OBJECT NOW!

    Many thanks

    Ian

My sister and brother in law were in Scotland last week and loved the country and history and people but said the food was :green: They really did not like the breadfast meat after they found what it was made of. I forgot the name but it sounded really bad.

The Edinburgh area mostly. My brother in law won the vacation by refering clients to Royal Bank of Scotland for business.
