I have a good five or six books by Middlebrook and they follow roughly the same style: background, the attackers, the defenders, the battle, aftermath, appendix of longer first-hand accounts. They are a very good source of first-person material thanks to all the interviews he carried out, but I did get a distinct feeling of déjà vu reading them - particularly the air battle books. As sources, they're excellent, but if I want something to read, I think I'd rather have Keith Lowe's Inferno for Hamburg or Ryan for Arnhem.
Back from London, and really impressed with it. Went to Charing Cross and Foyle's awesome military history section, but, any book i saw there i can buy it from amazon a lot cheaper. Even so i managed to get a few good deals there (at least i'd like to consider them good deals): Aviation Elite Units Nigeria Squadron and 352nd FG - £4.99 each; Panzer Battles (hardcover) - £3.99; Poles in the Defense of Britain (Robert Gretzyngier) - £5.99 Panzer Lehr Division 1944-45 - £6.99. Some of the books i ordered have arrived, namely Panzers in Normandy, General Hans Eberbach and the defense of France 1944 (which seems to me very interesting indeed); Germans in Normandy, which i already read it and really really liked it..... a lot; Combat History of German Tiger Tank Battalion 503 in World War II - Franz-Wilhelm Lochmann; And both volumes of Hubert Meyer, which i have here in front of me (went to the post office to pick them up today) and i'm still overwhelmed with it's size and scope, the amazing amount of information inside. It's truly midblowing.
wow op how much does it cost altogether for that? you buying everything from amazon? as in the books?
Nope, the ones with the price i got them in London this last weekend in some obscure bookshop in Charing Cross, the rest i buy from amazon, usually i go for the new & used, which almost always gives you some good deals. I don't buy from american dealers because the post i'll pay shoots up the price skyhigh.
Just a quick update, i've bought a few of them already, namely When the Odds Were Even: Vosges Mountains Campaign - Keith E. Bonn; Michael Wittmann and the Waffen SS Tiger Commanders of the Leibstandarte in WWII: v. 1 & 2 - Patrick Agte; The 12th SS: The History of the Hitler Youth Panzer Division: v. 1 & 2 - Hubert Meyer; Victory Was Beyond Their Grasp - Douglas E. Nash; Grenadiers - Kurt Meyer; The Germans in Normandy - Richard Hargreaves; Combat History of German Tiger Tank Battalion 503 in World War II - Franz-Wilhelm Lochmann; Combat History of German Heavy Anti-Tank Unit 653: In World War II - Karlheinz Munch; Panzer Legions: A Guide to the German Army Tank Divisions of World War II and Their Commanders - Samuel W. Mitcham; Hitler's Commander: Field Marshal Walther Model, Hitler's Favorite General - Steven H. Newton; and now i'm reading Victory Was Beyond Their Grasp - Douglas E. Nash, and the only comment i can make is, if you don't already have this book... what are you waiting for, a 5 star book. All of a sudden the Hell's Gates doesn't seem all that expensive. The Germans in Normandy is also a great book, but i think i already mentioned it somewhere.
Oh Foyles is a joy, Christina Foyle was quite special. Tons of anecdotes abound but she actually wrote to Hitler complaining about book burnings and offering to buy them instead, and she got a reply.
At least they've got rid of that very archaic slip system now for paying. Never understood that. Although Foyle's is 'slicker' now, I much preferred it 15 years ago (I think it had a better selection then too...)
I just placed my order in for Doctor Danger Forward: a World War II Memoir of a Combat Medical Aidman, First Infantry Division Allen N. Towne I am hoping its a good book once i get it i plan to read this before some of the others i had put an order in for
I liked the environment, and was quite impressed with its military history section. The only problem was, why buy there when you can get all those titles a lot cheaper online.
just picked up the war of the world: twentieth century conflict and the descent of the west by Niall Ferguson
