If I lived in the area (no, I'm in the US) I'd offer the use of my backhoe. Think what you could find moving a cubic meter of dirt every few minutes.
Some new relics from the Hurtgen Forest i found the last few trips. An Garand M1 Buttplate in fair condition: And after cleaning: Some German pieces from various items: All the latest finds: And something you find a lot these days:
A few nice items, I like the 50pf coin , I know it's common, but it's always cool to find a dated item. The glove is nice too and even the little medicine bottle.
This is just a wonderful thread! I hope it never ends, even though it just makes me jealous of anyone who is not an ocean away from these sites. The only military site I ever excavated was Boston Common in Boston, MA. We got some English relics from the revolution but not nearly as much as the Hurtgen Forest can yield. (And I had to give everything to the city's archaeologist!)
Another great haul of relics, Ed. The clips and hooks in the picture below are from a German rucksack, and the cap in the lower photo is from a German canteen...but I expect you already know that.
The clip is also common for the belt on a German gasmaskcontainer en the upper right clip is also from the belt of the German canteen. The upper left clip can belong to the German rucksack indeed or the breadbag. But i did not know that before, thanks!
The coin i found has the swastika, but i also found an earlier version dating 1936, that one has no swastika.
Last weekend i went on another trip with a friend and we found the following items: Sunset on the way to the Hurtgen Forest. A bunch of batteries on the side of a foxhole: The view from the edge of the forest: A mortar, dug back in the ground!: US items: And a find in a bombcrater: (a Matchbox car from 1957) And my buddy part of the finds that day: German gasmask part Part K98 ammo pouch with marking: Unknown:
Such beautiful country and yet more great finds. I would go their every day if I lived on the other side of the Atlantic. You are very fortunate to be able to visit the sites that you have visited and the rest of us are very fortunate that you take the time to share your discoveries. Thanks again!
