"Whassis?" A cover from 1940's Mechanical Science or Popular Mechanic? If it looks bad, usually is. ..Probably an editor told his artist: "draw a futuristic bomber". Like that episode of the Simpsons, where Homer designs and manufactures a car.
You lugs are failing me... Famous designer. Next hint. Did you know that B-29('s) flew in Europe? They tried bombing a U-Boat pen with one to see if it would be effective, high enough - aka to make do and not have to develop the above. http://www.network54.com/Forum/149674/message/1323588592/Project+Ruby+-+a+single+B-29+bombed+sub+pens+in+Germany+in+1945 And yes, Takao, for one, is on the ball today (below...)
Regretfully, the article/book is in error, only B-17s were used during 1945, the three B-29s(45-21747, 45-21750, 45-21751) did not arrive for Project Ruby until early 1946. They would continue to serve in this capacity with Project Harken operating through 1947. The target of the B-17s in 1945 was the concrete shelter for U-Boat construction at Farge, Germany. The B-29s were used against targets on the island of Heligoland, before they too were used against the concrete sheltter at Farge. http://www.mildenhall.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123183828 http://books.google.com/books?id=eEI7AwAAQBAJ&pg=PT158&lpg=PT158&dq=%22Project+Harken%22&source=bl&ots=H7Pk76j4rI&sig=wCI4mlSdAu_GlIpKekX-88NFvKg&hl=en&sa=X&ei=dErZU_73NsmcyASrqILQDA&ved=0CD0Q6AEwBw#v=onepage&q=%22Project%20Harken%22&f=false British bombing reports from Project Harken http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/080379.pdf
Usually, I have seen the engines as given as 6 Centaurus in 1942(not sure of the actual date though, so possibly the changeover was made in 1942), IIRC, the merlins were spec'd in the original design...I can only presume that the change from the Merlin to the Centaurus came about because of the increasing weight of the aircraft.
I'm not. The British did not acquire their own B-29 "Washington" bombers until March, 1950, a few years into the future.
My apologies. But I really want to know what plane is it. I can´t post the photo, must say Its a WWII photo that someone have post in a WWI thread ... I would say it´s a texan . Library of the congress 1942.
Don't think so. From the looks of it the wing appears to be fabric covered, probably the upper wing of a primary trainer(PT).
Two captured Dutch Fokker G.1s painted with German markings. IIRC, this photo was taken at Bergen airfield in Noord-Holland province.
Larger pic of it here for others to see the Ilyushin Il-2 Sturmovik http://www.assonetart.com/ClashofArmor.jpg
I'd say it's an Il-2M (early variant) as it has a back cockpit, and it's wing shape is distinctly different from a standard IL-2.
