The prop on the nose suggests it some kind of precursor to the B-17, but don't have a clue?

To be exact, the "twin beech" is a Beech C-45F Expeditor.

the bomber is a captured Japanese Nakajima G8N1 Renzan.

Sure looks like a P-51. Windscreen, canopy, seat and black dot? line up as P-51.

The bulge above the wing threw me. Hadn’t even noticed the black dot.

    It's an XP-75 Eagle probably S/N 44-32166

Well, that took all of 30 seconds...

Note the windscreen lower frame curve, the lower canopy valance width and the panel lines. The "bulge" is just an illusion, it is a reflection of the wing on the side panels, bad photo. I'll stick with P-51.

Doesn't have that small black circle or hole right below the cockpit like the XP-75 does, as does the original picture.

Or, it could well be a P-51D.

Thanks for the replies. I can rule out the XP75 and after chibobber noted the 'bulge' I was seeing was most likely light contrast. I'm confident it's a P51. The dude sitting in it received his in January 1945.

Ps: I'm either outta 'likes' or my button ain't working. I'll catch up with y'all later on that score.

I'm changing my answer to a P80. Merle was an instructor in the F80 around 1947 and the apparent height angle up to him in the picture looks too high to me for aP51. And there's that bulge above the wing. I'll try to enlarge the other pic.
