    Agree with your assessment.

The picture is a still of a captured Japanese movie (about 70 seconds in duration) that shows the vessel under attack. The Japanese called this vessel HMS Pope. This picture may be very deceiving, but since both the USS Pope and USS Edsall suffered the same fate, in different locations, it is very difficult to prove which vessel it truly is.

We will never know if it was Pope or Edsall unless we come up with some more info, were the same Japanese cruisers involved? The records could show which ship the film was taken from, I believe for Pope it was Myoko and Ashigara.

Probably not my turn but can't resist this one, I want the big one:

The picture is obviously retouched (at least colorized) but the difference in size is staggering, the "small one" is a 16" gun battleship !!!

Does anyone have a similar pic of a Lexington next to a Colorado ?

Akagi in her original guise. As built she had two "flying off" decks. Very much like a much enlarged Glorious, actually. Probably not entirely by coincidence. The "small" one is Nagato. And I'll ask that someone else take the next one as I've not been on regularly enough lately. (Computer is working again, but I've been painfully busy.)

    Akagi and Nagato (in 1927).

Looks like it's open, anyone has a good one ? Please stop me before I end up posting a 100tonn Regia Marina auxilliary :D

That looks like a model diorama. Notice the lack of humans?

The deck markings on the carrier are a bit suspicious so you may be right but I'm not convinced. The "model" look may be due to the retouching and "coloring". If it's a model the author is much better than anyone I've seen, even the very large scale models in some museums don't look that good.
To make the point here are one B&W and one retouched picture of our next subject from the same source (and no it's not a 100t Italian auxilliary). Pics are a bit big (unlike the "blob tank" currenly in a parallel thread ;)) but otherwise it would be impossible to judge.

    Definitely the Hosho.

The flags in the color picture give it away.

Yes it's the Hosho, the picture quality of the B&W one is not what I'm used to from Japanese picures that are usually a lot more "coarse grained".

alright....this one should be easy; but, it's not a picture of a ship, it's a picture of part of a ship: a very unique part of a ship and only one war ship in the entire world has one. So, if you know where it is you should certainly be able to share why it exists and I encourage you to do so.

Battleship USS Iowa. The tub was fitted when she carried Roosevelt to one of the Big Three conferences, I suppose Tehran in 1943 since after that Iowa was employed in the Pacific. Couldn't literally go to Tehran of course, dropped FDR in Alexandria for a preliminary conference with Churchill and Chiang Kai-Shek, then the British and American delegations flew to Tehran.

FDR also travelled on the heavy cruiser Augusta several times. She was one of I believe four CAs fitted with extra accommodations to serve as a fleet flagship, but I don't suppose that included a tub. Augusta spent most of the war in the Atlantic, including service at D-Day in Normandy.
