It looks like an old whaler converted into a mine sweeper. Is it an MG or a harpoon gun on the fore deck?
Tried to trace her through the gun but no joy, my usual reference site doesn't even list classes for the 3"/23 USA 3"/23 (7.62 cm) Marks 4, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 14
No RAM, it is as mundane as they come. Hint: The US converted a number of trawlers and purse seine trawlers to minesweepers in 1941-42 because of a shortage.
USS Linnet (AM-76). http://www.navsource.org/archives/11/110207602.jpg Almost thought it was Bluebird, which is remarkably similar, but doesn't have the cutaway under the bridge. Out of curiosity, what's the submersible like object on her deck?
Those are paravanes used for steaming an array for cutting anchored mines. And yes, that is the ship.
Okey dokey, here goes. Can anyone name this vessel? QuizPic-1 pictures from history photos on webshots Context is key. Not sure if this will be easy or difficult, but hints and additional photos can be provided as needed. Sincerely, David
The gun looks like a 40/56 Bofors, if it is the ship is quite small. The things in the background look like barges .... and the background itself industrial. Nothing there that rings a bell for me.
The ship is indeed quite small and those are in fact barges in a quite industrial neighborhood. Here's a photograph of the ship in question in her wartime guise. With identifying marks scrubbed out, of course. QuizPic-2 pictures from history photos on webshots I would actually guess that what you're seeing is what's left of her 3"/50 cal, though she did mount Bofors 40s as well. However, it's difficult for me to be sure what you're looking at, or even exactly what's still there, as the photo is rather small and the wreckage rather jumbled. I will say that at the time of her loss she sank in a pretty good bit of water, though at the time of the photo this isn't apparent. Further hints and additional photographs can be given.
She looks like an ocean minesweeper and carries two objects that definetly look like paravanes I would say Admirable class, from the settings one of those sent the soviets?.
Indeed she did carry parvanes. (Thanks to T.A. for pointing them out to me on the last sweep. Should have known that, really, as I've toured an Admirable. Though not in many long years.) And yes, it is indeed even an Admirable. Quite a lot of them, though, and I'm hoping from context this particular one can be nailed down. You might think of her as "the one that got away."
That rules out Advent, Advocate, Alarm, Apex, Arcade, Apex, Arch, Armada, Aspire and Assail. Only 49 to choose from left. From my info Lance, Logic, Lucid and Magnet were given to the chinese as well, still searching ..... EDIT: The above list was from Jane's some additional internet search turns up a few more "reds" Barrier, Bombard, Bond, Candid, Capable, Captivate, Caravan, Caution also were "lend-leased"to USSR Buoyant to China (maybe) The search goes on ..... Another non starter is USS Density, she was converted to an off-shore radio station, yes I know the were called "pirate stations" but she still would not have any guns at the time of her sinking . First guess is USS Gayety as she did escape Vietnam at the time of the final debacle so would qualify as "the one that got away". FINAL EDIT: Wrong guess she's USS Inaugural that "broke her moorings" and eventually sank in 1993. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Inaugural_(AM-242)
Indeed. USS Inaugural. Slipped her moorings in the flood and unfortunately, she's stayed where she landed ever since. I quite miss the old girl. Actually toured her once or twice as a kid. She was a neat part of the levy experience. That makes it yours TOS.
