I don't agree the number could be that high in the absence of a total breakdown of the Western Armies. But then, what are conjecture discussions good for?

How should I say this in disagreement to escalate this thread into a flame war? :D:eek::D

And why do you think that so many troops would be taken prisoner especially after the German forces had shared their stories with the Allies sans Bolsheviks? More likely scenario would be the collapse of the Soviet Union just as Russia collapsed during the First World War after the first two atomics went off.

Not exactly sure as to what you mean here when talking about "stories" but no need for explanation I just wanted to ask a question and not get myself tangled in this web again.........

Unfortunately it was a little more complicated then that...... You see it as Russia collapsing, I see it as the birth of communism. ;)

I am once again out!!! :D

    P.S.

Jeff, I also think that the Allies would have many Soviet POW's as well.....;)

Initially, in any continuation war, with overwhelming superiority in ground forces, the Red Army would have enveloped and captured hundreds of thousands of Allied troops.

Thinking ahead, and already knowing about atomic weapons, Stalin in his insane wisdom would most likely have moved the Soviet government and military command centers to safe underground locations far away from obvious Allied nuke targets, including all major cities.

Additionally, Stalin certainly would have relocated the millions of German pows from WW2 and the hundreds of thousands of Allied pows swept up at the beginning of the continuation war straight to all major cities and military target areas as a form of blackmail or to make the Allies pay dearly for any nuke attack.

The question then becomes a moral one. How to defeat the Soviet Union in the shortest and least costly way possible. Give up the pows and go forward with nuke attacks or develop a different strategy which may take quite a bit longer and with less cetainty of success. What is the value of millions of pows?

If the war between the West and the Soviet Union that say stretched into 1947 or 1948, then we have a major proble for the Soviet Union in that what would be the effect of large Bomber wings of the New Convair B-36 which if based in Britain had the range of 10,000 kilometres and could deliver 36,000 kilo's of ordnance, this is in conjunction to the already proliferation of Allied Bombers in the West and plus say i throw a spanner into the works and that Japan and The United States call an Armistice and ally themselves in the Soviet East.

I conclude that the Soviets would be smashed, it would not hope to survive a massive aerial, land and sea war on three fronts of Western Europe/Persia/Asia.
