Hello all, I'm new here, my name is Dylan and I live in the netherlands. My dad is german, so my whole family from my dads side is german. my great grandfather and my grandpa has fought in the german army which makes sense because he is german. Unfortunately i have very little information about them, because we never talk about the war. when my great grandpa died (not in war) my dad found some old documents from the war from my great grandfather. 2 of those documents were a letter where my great grandfather received a silver medal (or something?) and a black medal because he was wounded in the war. im here to learn more about the war and maybe i can find more information about my great grandfather. unfortunately the medals are nowhere to be found, I guess my great grandfather was not proud of those medals, which I can imagine
Hi and welcome to the forums. I'm assuming that your great grandfather served in WW1 and if this is so then the silver and black medals that you refer to could very likely be silver and black wound badges. There were three wound badges in total, black, silver and gold and each was awarded depending on the number of times a soldier was wounded. Black 1 -2 wounds Silver 3 - 4 wounds Gold 5 or more wounds The badges were also issued during WW2 but with the addition of a swastika in the centre of the badge.
