So guys, yesterday I was at the premiere of this film. The first disappointment - half-empty hall. I see this is for two reasons: lack of a broad advertising campaign and the overall low interest in the present generation to this topic. Fortunately, the first disappointment was the last.
Although I do not really want to watch this film. I was afraid that he will disappoint me. The fact is, this spring in Russia came another movie about the war: «Utomlennie solntsem» (Burnt by the Sun), Part 2. This film had a large budget, support from the government. Shooting this film directed by famous Russian producer Nikita Mikhalkov. During the first part of the film, Nikita won an Oscar in 1994 for best foreign film. But the second part ..... I have no words. And I'm not alone in my opinion. This film became the most expensive and thus a failure in the history of Russian cinema. In short, I was very disappointed and this new movie took a very cautious.
What can I say about "Brest fortress". Budget it is much more modest. Apparently, the government has not seen fit to support the director's little-known. The film consist many pyrotechnics, explosions, equipment, weapons, but generally felt that resources were limited. Personally, I could not just watch my military background (I served in the Army 18 years). Therefore, I was noticing small military - tactical errors and absurdities. Although in general, the historical facts are shown correctly: Fortress is not prepared for defense. The garrison consisted of disparate units. The losses suffered by German troops in this area (more than in all Polish company) were caused by the courage of individual soldiers and commanders.
But this stuff. I think that in general the film was a success and worth to watch. It is heavy to watch. My wife was crying. The other women in the cinema hall were crying too. This is not a blockbuster like "Saving Private Ryan" (no so masterfully filmed). This is not chronic- historical movie. But it's just a heavy realistic film about the early days of the Great Patriotic War in Russia.

By the way, except for the film "Brest Fortress" I can recommend another movie about the war, shot recently. He is more adapted to the interests of modern youth and enjoyed success. I like it too much. This is a movie "Mu iz bydystsego” (We Are From the Future) Part 1 and Part 2.

    Hi, Sniper, thank,s you
I think, if you do not pay attention to detail, and not wait for the greatest spectacle like "Avatar" or "Spartak" - then it’s worth watching.
Especially if there is a desire to understand more deeply another nation. At least, this is the Russian film, and (IMHO) it really shows the character of the Russian (as negative, so and positive). Such as the movie "The Longest Day" shows the character of Americans (IMHO too).

Hi Iru, thank you for your thoughts on this movie, and as always, I find your words interesting to read ;-))

I was wondering if you have seen Alexander Nevsky with Nikolai Chakerrsov (SP?) and also the remake of Taras Bulba? Ive seen both, liked Nevsky and liked Bulba even more as im a big fan of Yul Brynner.

Heres another id like your opinion on-which is one Ray kindly posted clips from-called: Tankova Brigada. I thought what I saw was absolutely fantastic as far as fighting and original vehicles and such used.

Hi Carl. I watched the film "Alexander Nevsky" as I was a child for more than ten times. On the one hand at that time in our country was not so many interesting films. On the other hand it's really exciting movie for that time. Probably all of my generation grew up on movies such as "Chapaev", "Kotovsky," "Alexander Nevsky".
As for the movie "Taras Bulba". The film was shot on the novel by Ukrainian writer - Nikolai Gogol, in the year of its 200 - anniversary. But the producer of this movie was a Russian. As a result, in terms of history and the original, film has made is not as believable as the book.
But we must remember that due to our policy, relations between Russia and Ukraine are not very good. In addition, in the book, Gogol very impartially describes Jews. Producer tried to smooth it all.
Despite the efforts of the producer's, this film are all very criticized in Ukraine, called pro-Russian, and even removed his own version of this movie.
But if we are aside from politics, I liked the movie. And Taras Bulba, as an Ukrainian national hero - is worthy of respect.
Thanks for the mention of the movie "Armored Brigade." I had never heard of him. Now I read that the shooting of the film involved only real technique. I surely will watch it , thank you, Carl.

Hi IRu, thank you for the insights on these movies as well as for info on others. Did you know that Taras Bulba was remade a few years ago? I saw some clips from it that Ray or someone posted here sometime ago and thought it was good enough to try to get a copy of-which I do think its on DvD over here ;-))

I likked the original "bulba" so much partly because im a big fan of Yul Brynner & Tony Curtis. Brynner looks good as Bulba and I thought did an excellent job of acting as always. Tony Curtis was good as his eldest Son, but I felt that he was out of place in a movie such as this.

Thanks to Ray, I got to know of and see clips from Tankova Brigada. Im hoping to get it on dvd somehow. From the clips I saw of it, they did use real tecnical equipment. Im hoping that the PAK I saw that as crushed by a T-34 was not a real PAK ;-)) When I can? and when my home PC works, I go look at the clips from that movie which are on youtube.

I saw last year--Come and See, liked it for certain things but in the end didnt care for it too much. Certain technical things really impressed me like when machineguns were fired-you saw tracers and saw them bouncing off the ground-objects etc.

Did you see the fairly new movie that has Daniel Craig in it as one of the Bielski Boys-called: Defiance. I bought the movie earlier this year and liked it but wished it had a bit more action in it. I would love to see more movies come from your area as I would like to see things through those film-makers points of view-something we dont see much over here.

Take care and I hope to learn more form you--Sincerely--Carl.

PS, I wouldnt mind seeing a remake of both: Alexander Nevsky and Battleship Potemkin. I plan on ordering the Potemkim movie soon as I cna think of it. Ive seen it twice played on TCM and really enjoy it more each time I see it.
