The Big Red One is an awful, awful movie. Nothing of the equipment is right, the story's unclear and makes strange jumps and the characters are nowhere near charismatic in any way. I shut it off after 30 minutes. They used post-war Isreali Super Shermans as German tanks!!
I forgot the name of a WWI movie. Was it the "Zepellin"? It starred Michael York as the WWI version of the "007" Ian Flemming, a British secret agent who were on board of a German Zeppelin, its mission: capturing of the British Magna Carte. The fighting scenes on the ground and in the air were fierce and will sure to capture your attention. Does anyone know if the Germans did attempt to steal the British magna carta in WWI? I saw a Peter O'toole WWII movie when I was a kid, the name escaped me. Peter was the British pilot who was obscessed with sinking the German U-boat, of course he perished along with the U-boat at the end. The interesting part was, it took place not on the open sea, but in a river. I wish I know the name of this movie so I can rent or buy it.
Shame. Well, I have dozens of movies which I havent seen yet in my dvd-collection. Blue Max have to wait. Roel: The Big Red One is again one of those films which I saw as a teenager. I'm not sure will I like it anymore. For the equipment, they aren't so important to me, story is. Besides, Lee Marvin plays the main character. How bad can it be? :smok:
Liang, I believe that "Zeppelin"-movie is this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068014/ That Peter O'Toole -movie sounds familiar (atleast the ending). I'll try to find it from http://www.imdb.com/ Edit: Found it. Murphy's War
Some of the best WW1 fighting scenes I've seen, surprisingly, were in an otherwise terrible movie in the "Young Indiana Jones" series (of which I accidetnally saw only this one. Don't hurt me! ). It featured the young adventurer in WW1 trench fighting for about 45 minutes, after which it became a very stupid and unlikely escape movie. But those 45 minutes were gold!
There is a movie called "ANZACs: The War Down Under", which is about a group of Australian soldiers in World War One. A truly excellent flick. Paul Hogan, best known as 'Crocodile' Dundee, has a major role in it.
Lots of great movies have been list so far! Here's one of mine: Dr. Stranglove with Peter Sellers. Not really a war movie but; The Bounty with Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins. I went aboard the movie ship Bounty several years ago. Gave me a lot of respect for old time sailors! They sailed thousands of miles on THAT?!
Some of the best my movies I like, not all of them classic war movies: Enemy at the Gates DasBoot Paths of Glory The thin red line Mel Gibsons Wallace The Longest Day A Bridge Too Far Glory
I think you mean Braveheart, in which Mel Gibson played the part of William Wallace... It's always fun to have an Australian play a Scotsman.
It's too bad that Braveheart is so historically inaccurate, for it is a first rate film in other respects, such as the script, performances, and cinematography. Of course, Mel Gibson's The Patriot was much worse in all categories, especially historical accuracy.
What, so you're telling me the War of American Independence wasn't won by one man and his three sons hacking away at Dragoons with tomahawks?
Likes (Real Favourites here): Platoon, Das Boot (Subtitled, not dubbed), Stalingrad, the first half of Apocalypse Now, The man who never was. Dislikes (Not many really that I take a huge dislike to): Hamburger Hill and the second half of Apocalypse Now.
i dont live to far away from where hamburger hill was filmed. plus has anyone seen southern comforts its not exactly a war film but it is about the american national guard
I rather enjoyed it, particulary the excellent musical background-all authenthcs French military marches of the period... How about The Horse Soldiers ( John Wayne, 1959) The Dawn Patrol (1938) Sergeant York (1941) All's Quiet in he Western Front Kolberg Lawrence of Arabia
Ignore it... Indeed, they got the big pikes OK but they didn't understand that cavalry will simply hit those pikemen in the flanks if they have any alternative; only when in a bottleneck (like a bridge) would you charge straight at those pikes. Unless I still didn't quite understand chivalric codes...
