An old book worth looking out for is 'Flight In The Winter' by Jurgen Thorwald. It was published in England by Hutchinson in 1953 and gives a lot of information about the Russian advance into Northern Germany and the plight of refugees.

It sold very few copies because in 1953, no-one was really interested.....

too bad about the reader reviews on the last title WW

have seen the old bildbands brought back from Germany from the 30's before the Russians flattened what once was the capital of Ost Preußia and the old terribly ugly dark brown-red buildings, many stills tanding and the pollution is beyond reason. One of the cheif reasons for the Kessel truppen to hold out as long as they did as they knew full well they were going to be sacrificed was to allow more GErman troop and civilain movements to leave Danzig and then along Hela bay depriving the Soviets of more needed troops to close that area. obviously it finally was but many many folk were able to be transported away by every possible navy means to inner Germany and Denmark

another title to consider by a man who was a survivor off the Wilhelm Gustloff. some 50 years of research on Ost Preußia under this man's belt with at least 6 - 8 titles plus on this subject matter. He has interviewed many that survived the doom and gloom in the final months.
I personally have two of his books, unbelievable and indepth information ...........
