Now that I've thought of it, I have tried something called German potato salad. I really like potato salad, and I actually pride myself on my own of course. But that was some of the most gawd-awful swill I ever tried to choke down. NEVER try to eat some of that stuff, I don't care how hungry you are....
Looks are very deceiving. That was the most horrible culinary moment in my life. Well, eating c-rations in the Army was pretty bad, but I didn't pay for them in a restaurant. German potato salad is disgusting. I should have took note when the waitress asked if I have ever eaten it before, and where was I from but nooooooooooooooooooo. I wanted potato salad. Never, ever again....
Oooo, no no. No shreadded Cabbage but, how about shreadded Romaine Lettuce instead as a suitable substitute? ;-)) I love Romaine Lettuce and had some for supper a couple days ago
I cant stand Chermin PotatoE Salad either and agree-its Swill. However, the stuff Suzie posted looks like a work of art and i'd be more than glad to eat my fill of this exacmple, Also, I sure miss mu Mothers version of PotatoE Salad-which she used MIRACLEWHIP ressing stead of Mayo-and this stuff was delicious PS-I HATE Mustard PotatoE Salad.
Yea i agree Carl, miracle whip is better for potato salad, and maccaroni salad. Can't wait for summer, it's a perfect companion to BBQ ribs,
Zatarain's spiced mayonnaise is better that regular mayonnaise when used in potato salad. However, nothing is good when German potato salad is concerned....
??? If your purpose is to render it inedible then I guess. Miracle whip is an abomination. As for German potatoe salid I've always enjoyed it much better than anything made with Miracle whip even if it's not made very well.
Come on guys and gals, the Miricle Whip/mayo debate is without end. It really is a matter of your personal taste buds. Miracle Whip does seem to start out much like mayonnaise in the ingredients, but it has additional sugar and vinegar in the mix, which defines it as a salad dressing. (mayonnaise has no or very little sugar) A blender mayo I put together every now and then contains; 1 egg, 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 2 tablespoons vinegar or lemon juice, I cup salad, peanut, or olive oil. The oils can be blended in ratios like ½ peanut and ½ olive oil. Another thing I like doing is "flavoring" my mayo with flavors like a little crushed garlic, or paprika, a dash of cayenne pepper, or herbs for special dishes. Not all together, but one at a time makes a good mayo. Since you only end up with about 1 ½ cups you aren’t out much if you don’t like the "flavor" you picked to try. As to german style potato salad, I have enjoyed it both hot and cold. In fact hot potato salad is one of my favorite things. What isn't to like, potatoes and bacon in the mix. Now I did have one german "hot salad" once which had wilted lettuce in it, and I was unimpressed but too polite to not eat it when offered.
Well, the German potato salad I had the misfortune of tasting was sour and extremely distasteful. I had no idea people ate such things....
Heh heh, Hi Suzie, that's two against one. Maybe we'll be able to convert him over from the dark side of fine dining? ;-))
See, our reverse psychology worked great on Clint ;-)) I KNEW that if we acted like we were disagreeing about which was best to use? that we'd get one of Clints Recipes ;-)) It worked  Also, I might try that sometime just to see. Anyone here have a recipe for Chilis Honey-Mustard?
Even i wouldnt give a condemned prisoner-German PotatoE Salad as his last meal. I have more compassion than that
I like sour. Sometimes will make cole slaw with only vinegar as a dressing the same on subs on occasion. I do like most things among the handfull I don't like are Miracle whip and just about anything it touches and sweet pickles. I do like most sweets so it's odd. On that Mayo reciepe. The egg is raw right or do you use hard boiled? I've heard that you can use vinegar to resolubalize cooked egg but haven't tried it. Will have to try that reciepe soon. Something to do with some of the excess wasabe I've got sitting around .... Oh if you want to make a good marinade try one vodka based. It will carry many flavors deep into the meet much faster than many others. I make a marinading vodka at the end of the pepper growing season that has an incredible flavor. An hour or two and it really perk's up meat.
lwd's mention of vinegar brought back by first experience of the New England style of cuisine. My wife is from Rhode Island and our first trip there together she ordered a "Vanilla Cabinet" and put vinegar on her French Fries. I wondered why she was asking for a white kitchen cupboard and, Vinegar & Fries!!? Actually the fries weren't too bad and she explained a "Vanilla Cabinet" was what we in the Midwest call a milkshake. If you order a "milkshake" you get flavored milk whipped or shaken.
It is one large raw egg, don't worry too much about salmonela or anything. At least not in the US really, since most store bought eggs are pasturized. If you are concerned you can substitute the "egg substitute" liquids which are 98% real egg anyway, just less yoke really and pasturized as well. Those homemade mayo recipes are good only for about a week or so in the 'fridge though. Not because they go "bad" and dangerous or anything, but because without "industrial stabalizers" like store bought mayonnaise, they tend to separate and go 'flat' if you know what I mean.
I live in Pennsylvania and have never heard of a vanilla cabinet. My daughter-in-law is a vinegar and fries lover, and now my son and their children eat them, too. Your confusion about milkshakes reminds me of my first day at college at Penn State. All my life, I've called my carbonated beverages a "soda". When I traveled to Penn State, I went to the local burger place and ordered a vanilla soda. Imagine my surprise when I was given an ice cream soda. It seems that in central Pennsylvania (and I think the Midwest), if you want a carbonated beverage, the correct term is "pop". I could never bring myself to order that way, so I always just stuck with Coke. As to potato salad, I'm not a big fan of either cold or hot, German or any other type. I'm not big on mayonnaise in the first place, and mixing it with cold potatoes is not something I look forward to. Although I have eaten it on occasion, I could skip it and never miss it.
Hey Carl, I like to cook and don't mind sharing my recipes either. If you want to try the Chilis Honey-Mustard, I suggest you look here: Chili's Honey Mustard Dressing - 159877 - Recipezaar Looks legit, and sounds about right too.
The 'vanilla cabinet' is a left over from the French influence. At least that's what I've heard. I have had the same problem when asking for a soda. At one time, when I was much younger, I called it sodie'. Must have been the 'hillbilly' influence with the influx from Kentucky headin' North for the factory jobs. Anyway, I asked for "Sodie" in Minnesota and just got a strange look, went back and asked for "Soda" and was pointed to baking soda, went back a third time and asked for a "pop" and the guy say's "Here ya go fellow". Like you I now ask for Coke, Pepsi or just cola. As for the potato salad, warm is best-cold is fed to the pets. Who by the way usually don't eat it either.
