The F4Us are carrying ordnance, apparently to be the first wave of attack when a target is discovered. I doubt there was much need for escort fighters at that point. Since the Japanese refused to consider the possibility of surrender or capture, they couldn't train their people not to cooperate with the enemy. No "only name, rank, and serial number" for them.
