Where I grew up only the rich kids had their own bat. Some of them actually let us kids from the other side of the tracks ' borrow ' it for our At Bats sometimes.

Our right-of-passage was getting that brand new baseball glove. That my friend was a monumental Day, if you didn't sleep with that glove the first week after you got it, well you weren't a real sports fan. First thing you had to do was fit it to your hand by adjusting a couple of straps, apply leather cleaner to keep it 'like new' (just because) and take a baseball and slam it a Gazillion times into the palm to Make that pocket just right. Spiked shoes were the next big thing. Made your little 9 year old arse run that extra 1/2 mph faster. Plus you felt taller standing in them.

I sucked at baseball. It probably would have helped if I had had an eye examine since two years later I was wearing glasses. I was great in Right field but couldn't see the ball coming to the plate.

Yeah I’ve seen many a scene on American tv and movies around the baseball glove…I was in a sports shop today with my brother, and amongst the cricket gear was black baseball gloves…Cricketers use them in training to save their hands…Quite a feat in leather engineering.

I still have my gloves, even the catchers mitt given to me by a coach when I moved to behind the plate in the 5th grade. I still have my high school bat, although I dropped when I was a grown man and broke a piece off of the knob. The gloves are in good shape, considering their age. I still have most of my hats and my jersey from my senior year.

I did fairly well in baseball and was a starter every year l played except for the 3rd grade, when I was playing with 4th, 5th & 6th graders in Little League.
When I was a senior in HS, our coach was the football coach and he was a revolving ass. There were several of us who did not play football and he felt that since we did not play football, we should not play baseball. So, I rode the pines along with a few other friends for several games. Bear in mind, I started about half the games as a sophomore and all the games as Junior. He finally let me play the third game of the season. My first at bat, I had a 3-0 pitch and gave me the sign to take the pitch *. I knew the pitcher was going to lay in there for me, so I swung away, getting a three run shot over the fence in right center field.

The ass sat me for not taking the pitch and hitting the ball anyway.

One of my friends who also did not play football was just too good for him not to play him. We called him "Hoover" because of fielding skills and ended the year with a .560 batting average. The rest of us got in on rare occasions but would not quit just to spite him. We had 11 seniors on the team and had a losing season, if you can imagine that. This was after having .750 season the year before.
The coach was fired after that year, thankfully, for other reasons. He was 27-28 yo and got involved with a 18 yo girl from another high school.

    * "take" means not to swing at the pitch

This is similar to my first glove, about 65 years ago. There were no organized teams at that time, so we played mainly in the street. I wasn't very good, but I am grateful to my father for getting it as a surprise to me. This was in the mid-50s. I didn't know who Sam Mele was, but his signature was on it.

I started playing cricket as a little tacker…Both school and club cricket. When I was 16 I moved to Canberra and attended Stirling College to do years 11 and 12…I got onto the school team. The problem we had was a bloke called Michael Bevan who was annoyingly good…Every game he would smash the opposition around the park…We ended up giving him an 80 run limit where he had to retire and give the other guys a go at batting…I don’t know what he did after school… : )

Lionel Messi's decade long assist record broken by Ajax star

Lionel Messi's decade long assist record broken by Ajax star

36 assists in a single calendar seems insurmountable, but that number has been surpassed by Ajax's, Dusan Tadic who recorded his 37th assist of the calendar year in his side's 2-1 defeat to AZ Alkmaar.

Thanks and I second that. Hope everyone has a Happy Christmas and New Year. I really wish that no new variants surface and that by February we can really see this pandemic coming to an end. I feel fortunate, so far, that none of our family here in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania has been affected. But some family in Allentown, Pennsylvania have had Covid19 but to no severe end.

    Stevie Nicks:

Forty years ago, Stevie Nicks struck out from Fleetwood Mac, launched a solo career – and created a truly iconic song in the process. Nick Levine explores its power and influence.

For even the greatest rock and pop stars, striking out from the band that made their name can be a major challenge – just witness Mick Jagger's solo career. But one musical legend who had no trouble asserting her independence is Stevie Nicks. When she went solo in earnest 40 years ago, the woman who had been integral to Fleetwood Mac's transformation into the world's biggest band carved out an identity as a star in her own right. She didn't just make a chart-topping album, Bella Donna, but came up with a stunning anthem that only seems to grow more popular with age.

In 2019, Nicks became the first woman to be inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Well Winter has arrived. Low temperatures running in the minus teens (F) with highs??? hitting minus 2 ! We now have 18-22 inches of the light fluffy stuff on the ground. I'm not sure how thick the ice is, but there have been full size pickup trucks pulling ice house trailers around the lake.
Only two more months and we'll be seeing 30 and 40 degrees above.

Lovely December weather here in Franklin County Pennsylvania. Temperatures in the high 40’s to the mid 50’s during the day and upper 30’s at night. Not a snow flake in sight and none predicted for the near future. I guess that new Honda snow blower I purchased last winter will sit lonely in the garage for a while.

Little while longer...Here in Berks, it seems to be late January thru March is when we get the snow.

Course, when my folks got there snowblower, it was 2 years before they used it. My sidewalk is postage stamp sized, not to mention that I am in the middle of a row, so not only is it unnecessary, put more of a pain to drag around to the front.

Brought a 10 horse walk behind snowblower up from Illinois when we moved up here. But soon found out that a 30 horse tractor with a 7 foot blade or 5 foot snowblower was more in line with the snowfall we get. Broke down and hired a guy to plow the road to the house, minus 12F, to clear the last 16" dusting we got yesterday.

The Ruhr uprising (German: Ruhraufstand) or March uprising (Märzaufstand) was a left-wing workers' revolt in the Ruhr region of Germany in March 1920. The uprising took place initially in support of the call for a general strike issued by the Social Democrat members of the German government, the unions, and other parties in response to the right-wing Kapp Putsch of 13 March 1920.

The communists and socialists in the Ruhr had previously laid plans for "winning political power by the dictatorship of the proletariat" in the event of a general strike. But after the collapse of the Kapp Putsch, the German government sent in the Reichswehr (the German army) and right-wing Freikorps to crush the ongoing insurgency of the estimated 50,000 members of the "Red Ruhr Army". This was done with considerable brutality and involved numerous summary executions of prisoners, including the wounded. An estimated 1,000 workers were killed.

On 5 April, a large part of the Ruhr Army fled before the Reichswehr to the region occupied by the French Army. In response to the Reichswehr presence in the Ruhr, which contravened the Treaty of Versailles, the French occupied towns such as Frankfurt, Hanau and Darmstadt on 6 April.

The Reichswehr stopped only at the river Ruhr. The British occupation forces were threatening to occupy the Bergisches Land due to the breach of the Versailles Treaty. By 8 April, the Reichswehr controlled all of the northern Ruhr area.

By the end of the fighting, the Reichswehr had lost 208 dead and 123 missing, and Freikorps about 273 lives. An estimated 1,000 workers were killed. A memorial to the Ruhr Uprising was later commissioned and installed in Hagen.
