may i add another thought? i am anyways.

i know why there is a sever problem, every time when i type when in ww2 forums or ww2 chat forums or history ww2 fourms, this site is always first on the list.
this site as got a very good spot in google and it's well promotted to get newe members too sign on,which is a good thing.
also this can leave the forum with so many people with a sever trying to cope.
but i can say thiss forum is well promotted in a good way, others forums are to hard to find.:)

I have mixed feelings about forcing people to logon to browse the posts like is happening in the last few days. "Lurkers" are part of the internet culture and not necessarily to be discouraged. Is it a temporary merasure related to the recent problems or a change of policy?

It's hard to answer your question when it matters about other sites. Each forum hAs a different policy. I know you don't have to log in on this one (unless policies changed recently ) and I figure that if information is available, the goal is that as many people as possible may see it, so why restrict?

Don't worry chaps, I believe I can safely say that the exclusion of 'lurkers' here is a temporary measure to shield the server from the huge growth this place has experienced over the last year.

Normal service will hopefully be resumed very soon when the site's in a home where it's sheer popularity won't break the Internet again, and in the meantime the active/registered members still have a place to play & new chaps can still join if curiosity gets the better of them... or they want to know who/what 'Urqh' is.

Can the same procedure be used to exclude members....I'm all for that...no hold on...forget that...Bad idea...wouldnt want to deprive anyone of my knowlege, foresight and general all round brilliance..That would be such a shame.

As a temporary measure, to slow down traffic before we get the Cray 2 server, we might rename the forum to "Old farts slipper club" That ought to discourage the buggers.

I should 'lend' the Forums the use of the Servers here at work today...its a virtual ghost town. In this half of the office, there are only 5 of us in today. The other 6 are 'out of town' apparently...bring on the strippers! I mean, uh...

I had that problem as well, but since I had just downloaded all the latest virus updates for my Norton, I just ignored the problem here for the evening. A whole bunch of other stuff showed up "infected" and needed cleaning.

So when everything took off this morning I just figured one of those "infections" was the problem and when it was gone every thing worked again. Whole gob of "tracking cookies" and at least one or two worms (I forget the names) that Norton 2009 found on it's full system scan. I also downloaded IE8 yesterday, and that took a bit of time to set up and get going as well.

As Otto has previously noted, there will be some work being done on the equipment. We can probably expect some lapses while this is going on. Please be patient as I know Otto will let us know when all is done and we can go on our merry way.

Richard make sure it is in fact the Norton cd you are inserting...I had the clunking problem but realised after a while, I had been shouting at Norton for no reason...the coffee coaster though was ruined.
