"Twelve Curves" although that depends on how you count 'curves'. I've also seen it refered to as "24-zig".
Found another reference that calls it "Twenty-one curves", although there were apparently 24 originally, and the bottom was re-cut to eliminate 3 switchbacks.
That is odd, this site uses the same photo, for the same stretch of road: :: CBI Expeditions - Burma Road:The Road to Re-discover :: Maybe I'm reading it wrong?
The photo is taken in July of 1944. If you guys don't get it today I am going to give "MCOFFEE" the reigns.
The crowd is a mix of Army and Marines , the Marines have the camoflage covers on their helmets the Army guys do not. There also appears to be some British or Commonwealth troops present. Note the Marine MPs in the foreground with the M1 carbines at sling arms. It is on an Island in the Mariana chain. During the battle one Marine picked up the nickname "Pied Piper". Over 1,000 Japanese were taken prisoner. There is also a cemetary for Marine War Dogs on the Island. The person being buried is Japanese
You guys are killing me. Alright last hints: The picture was taken on Saipan The person being buried is a Japanese Army General
