yeah , i went to an old french fort in louisburg , Nova scotia and the beds in the french barracks werent any longer than 5'4. My mom just said that for some reason the average height back then was smaller.

Any ever visit any of the old sailing ships? USS Constituiton, Constellation of HMS Victory? Very cramped for 20th/21st century types. I also remember hearing that average size of Britons steadily declined as first farming and then industrialization became more common. The bottom was reached at the heigth of the industrial revolution.

Surely tall men and women existed in the medevial times, they were not very common though

Have you guys ever visited Tower of London ?

"The Arms and Armour (Part Two)

In the adjoining Sixteenth-century Room, fine arms and armour date from that century, but exclude English products. Most conspicuous is the massive suit of German armour made around 1540 for a man nearly seven feet tall"

Mens average height in Scandinavia (common people) declined from about 172 cm (5 foot 8) in viking age (700-1000) to about 165 cm (5 foot 5) in 17 century.
It grew slowly to about 169 cm in 19 century and then faster.
Average stature is approx 181 cm (5 feet 11) amongst Danish recruits.
Average height is declining sligtly as children reach puberty much earlier today[/url]
