Only peril can bring the French together. One can't impose unity out of the blue on a country that has 265 different kinds of cheese.

    December 1944.

To Great Admiral Dönitz, Commander in Chief of the German Navy:

After the battle of Sworbe, I feel I have to express how thanked I am, as the whole Eastern Army is to all the members of the Navy for their heroic efforts, sacrifices and decision in helping us. I am convinced that our struggle against an enemy immensely superior has strengthened in great shape the brotherhood liaisons between the German Army and the German Navy.

Colonel general Heinz Guderian, Chief of Staff of the Army.

"We were not revolutionary terrorists to whom assassination seemed the logical method for gaining personal political power. On the contrary, many of us hesitated on religious grounds to endorse Hitler's assassination, although we were dedicated to fighting the evil he personified. When we decided to kill him, it was only after considerable inner struggle and because there was no other way left. It was Hitler's life against the lives of millions of human beings. If ever in history an assassination was justifiable on moral and ethical grounds, this one was."

Colonel general Fedor von Bock, commander of Army Group 'B' to general Franz Halder, chief of staff of the Army:

    April 1940.

 I think Von Bock was not in a very good mood that day, nor he agreed a lot with Von Manstein's plans.

"Fate has offered us this opportunity, and I would not refuse it for anything in the world. I have examined myself before God and my conscience. It must be done because this man [Hitler] is evil personified."
    - Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg after gaining access to Hitler's briefings.

"The assassination must be attempted at all costs. Even if it should not succeed, an attempt to seize power in Berlin must be made. What matters now is no longer the practical purpose of the coup, but to prove to the world and for the records of history that the men of the resistance dared to take the decisive step. Compared to this objective, nothing else is of consequence."

Didn't Tresckow plant a bomb on the Führers plane in Russia? (If it is him i think i've read a book about that the bomb blew, Hitler died, Bormann "activated" a double of Hitler, a british agent finds out, flees to israel with the help from partisans, gets killed by jewish resistance, the war ends, and Martin Bormann was a Soviet spy.) Pretty interesting but not true.

"I speak prophetically. Just as the discovery that the earth moved around the sun led to a complete transformation of the way people looked at the world, so too the blood and racial teachings of National Socialism will change our understanding of mankind's past and its future."

(The Führer before the Reichstag on 30 January 1937)
