    I think it is a spade-handle. the blade of the spade is in the canvas bag it is attached to.

    Considering that new picture it seems like it's been the pickaxle. But I take it you can also make a shovel uit of that?

    you can also fit the spike bayonet on the other end, that is what the metal fitting is for.
