That ties in with the original BBC showing - Monday/Saturday inclusive in German with subtitles. Wish they'd do it again....
I prefer the 1973 book by Lothar-Günther Buchheim on which the mini-series is based on. Almost 600 pages, even in the 1993 paperback version. As (almost) always, the book is better than the movie. Cheers,
You're right, books are always better than films. Although they cannot be compared quite well, because they are two very different kinds of art.
Yeah, I have the book and two versions of the film. The short movie (or long movie?!! anyway just one tapoe) and the miniseries on three tapes (cut up into six episodes, which is the way it was apparently shown in Germany. It is a most excellent film, IMHO for the most part it leaves any other submarine film ever made far behind.
the German novel: http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/3492218008/cosmopolis/028-0006324-7444557 There is also an English (!) translation of Buchheim's novel "Das Boot" (The Boat), but you have to be very lucky to get a hand on it. If you think the movie had too much "action" and too less insight into the charaters and the daily, boring life on a sub, get the book, definately worth a reading. Cheers,
