Originally, Patton named the dog "William", after William the Conqueror, but after a humiliating incident in England, the dog was renamed "Willie".

As to the initial post, the winner is the one that gets the first well aimed shot!

Actually, Willie was an English bull terrior that was orphaned when his owner, a RAF pilot, was killed on a bombing mission. Patton found Willie in a kennel in London and bought him because of his ferocious appearance. He was mortified to find that Willie was amiable.

He tried to trian Willie to become more agressive, but that stopped when Willie ran into a command and recon car on March 10th, 1944. Patton was very fond of the dog, and even had a chair for Willie at the dining table.

(from "Patton, Ordeal and Triumph" by Lasdilas Farago).

It seems that the incident we have all seen in the movie "Patton" is pure Hollywood.
