And thus, as in all discussion of armour per se, no matter what the detailed technical considerations it all actually comes down to the size and power of the BFGs being pointed at it...

What a great picture. I would have taken it for Korea at first glance

Hmm I am not sure about that. Some other things counted for more than technical specifications in WW2 armoured warfare:-

    1. Tactical expertise of the commanders. Good tactics and a willingness to make imaginative use of unlikely weapons such as AA guns to make up for deficiencies in tank v tank capabilities.

    2. The underlying fighting spirit of the Army. Morale matters. Some might be motivated by a passion for a cause; some by fear of consequences. It may have been hard not have been a hero in the Red Army. Technology may have effect. Soldiers with confidence in their equipment and survivability are more likely to behave with aggression and dash praised by commanders and historians. It is far easier to behave aggressively in a Pz VI than a Sherman. The public crisis of confidence in the British armour in 1944 reflects this. http://hansard.millbanksystems.com/commons/1944/jul/25/tanks .

    3. I wonder of the most important used of tanks was not on in battle facing other tanks but in pursuit. When we look back at the decisive use of tanks its Guderian after Sedan or Patton after eth break out. The key attribute of the ww2 tank was that it offered a unique combination of firepower, protection and mobility which gave it a particular advantage over an un prepared enemy or ion an encounter battle. Big guns are useless unless the vehicle offers some protection and is mobile anough to carry out its tactical and strategic tasks. As a weapon for conducting blitzkrieg the Sherman was far superior to the Tiger or panther

I wouldn't deny any of that, mate. (And would add production efficiency to the list as one of my favourite factors).
Technical considerations was all I was commenting on.
Slope it as much as you like; a SU152 hit is going to blow the turret off. ;)
