Great pictures Kai. They convey the vastness of Russia, the deaths suffered by both sides, and the difficulties of moving in the country when even the weather was against you. Sad.
Part of the hit-and-miss fascination of collecting these snapshots. Many have absolutely no indication to show what or where was photographed - others have a lot of contemporary detail ( if you can read the handwriting ! )
Another one - according to the writing on the reverse, 'preparing to cross over the River Desna'. A quite humdrum pic is made more interesting by the large half-track on the left which is towing a Nebelwerfer 41.....
I'm still fascinated by the thought of how many cameras these guys must have been carrying around....so I was pleased to get this one recently where you can actually see a camera ! These three look nicely dressed-up for an occasion....
I think I found "your" Otto (post 99) on the Volksbund site : Leutnant Otto Krüger was born on August 15th in 1916 in Breslau and died in a Feldlazarett 227 at Potchachowo-Witesbsk on April 7th 1942 . http://www.volksbund.de/index.php?id=1775&tx_igverlustsuche_pi2[gid]=f8668e04a2dc44469bf79f9a8f8314d3
They seem on a terrace, possibly to smoke and watch the scenery. The balcony looks like the architecture of a luxurious villa or a Chateau and the town looks like a harbour with cranes. Could it be around Riga or nearby? The pile of birch wood are for a big fireplace too.
Actually it seems easy. There seem to be only two directions : the one you came from and the other one, so you can't miss it. Some of the symbols are obviuos to guess . This needs confirmation by checking whether the units were there, but I could be right. 1) geometrical shapes + numbers = vehicles units (for example Panzer Kompanie to the left, Lastwagens to the right) 2) digit : (infanterie) units (42nd Panzer Grenadiere?) 635th Polizei ? 3) runes: SS units (IInd Waffen SS ?
one of my favourite threads. Currently on ebay.de via my friend Marco at koelssch333 Ebay sales Panzer IV 7,5cm Langrohr KwK - would appreciate comments/caption http://www.ebay.de/sch/koelsch333/m.html?item=361350183569&hash=item5422263a91&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562
Nice FE, back in the day a lot of pictures had that scalloped edge to every picture. Wondered why. Have some pics with same edges. Wonder if customer had to order the scalloped edge rather than the straight edges.
It's been a little while since I added to this thread - just received the following for my collection. No indication as to location, but this one certainly shows some 'scorched earth' going on .....
Another one freshly added. Quite unusual for these type of pics to show Stahlhelm being worn as opposed to carried. Presumably enemy or partisan contact was a possibility......
And another of those endless 'vormarsch in Russland' pics......poor quality, but I reckon we can forgive the long-forgotten photographer some camera-shake.......
