The Philippine Scouts were my mother's personal heroes, she had a great deal of experience working with them from before the war, at Ft Wm McKinley, and on Bataan and Corregidor at the start of the wa; she was a US Army nurse (She is the nurse tending a wounded Japanese on the cover of All This Hell by Monahan and Greenlee). If you follow this link, you can read what one of the nurses on Bataan and COrregidor said, and felt, about her heroes, "God Grades on a Curve"
I have been in awe of them for many years - such awe that I felt I was not worthy to even stand in a room where they were ... these giant heroes amongst men .... and when at long last I met so many (at a reunion of theirs) I left even more awed than before because they truly do not see themselves as anything more than ordinary, humble men, who like all others, desire to be remembered. Mother's heroes.
