IMO, the movie was very good, and very accurate. I own the dvd version and have seen it many times (with surround sound the battles are a blast  ). The Soviets DID execute their own soldiers. The Soviets DID cram them into trains for transport. The Germans WOULD shoot up obviously vulnerable troop transports, as well they should have. Friedrich was right when he said that anyone doubting this does not understand Stalins regime. As well, since the Soviets were desperate for a decisive epic victory against the Germans, they were quite willing to go to extreme measures to ensure their troops didnt retreat or desert.

Enemy at the Gates centered around two snipers dueling, but never really gave off the impression that it decided the fate of the war, more that the battle was symblic of how the war as a whole went. Also, there was no rape, it was totally voluntary for bothg parties, and all things considered, men and women serving together in such a desperate battle might relieve some tension by getting it on in the trenches.

yet another in a string of hollywood perversion and mutilation of factual events.

singly the worst 'war' movie i have ever seen.

I read a copy of EATG about 10 years ago, quite a thick book, it includes the sniper duel but covers a lot more of the battle than just this incident. I would guess that the filmmakers read the book and picked on the Zaitsev segment as being the most filmworthy?

BTW, what became of Zaitsev after Stalingrad, did he survive the war?

Zaitsev did survive the war but I don't know what he did after the war. Last I heard (which was some 4 years ago) he was still alive but was ill. If he has passed away in the mean time, I have not heard about it.

Many of the objections in this review sound convincing, others not. Of course it is a declared Russian-patriotic point of view, but biased does not necessarily mean wrong.

"Well-fed" characters? Annaud can hardly let them starve them until their faces look realistic. But ok, maybe the make-up artists could have done a better job.

About the "rape": Nowhere this review states it would be rape! "Sexual scene looks like a sadistic perversion." - well, it does not look romantic, but this is not meant to be rape.

They claim the exact opposite, that faces look unnnatural clean and "rosy".

But would he have wanted to? I don't know. Do you know better, or the guys of this site? I can't judge this.
