perhaps we need a un that actually is an action center , i mean if preventing somalia ,rawanda and darfur arent more important than a large self serving blabfest and circle jerk ,what is ?

who is it that the un put in charge of human rights violations again? iran and who ? if we want comedy lets hire the crew from monty python or second city or saturday night live ..its much less expensive and will get more accomplished too...

I think it's a very good thing that the U.N. has no power and is in fact a meeting place only

the decision to " Do Something " following media cameo is too often misguided .
    - Somalia ... a failed state of clans used as battleground by the neighbors
    - Ruanda .... pay-back and you can add next-door Burundi where the Hutus are sharpening their machetes for a bit of direct physical democracy on the Tutsis bastards
    - Dafur .... international oil politics in a dusty nowhere

The times when the U.N. tried to fix things was Palestine and the then general secretary was shot by the jewish terrorist of menachem Begin's Irgun
later that was the belgian Congo where the general secretary plane was crashed , allegedly by the Societe generale des mines ,
For information both places are still headache for any reasonnable person
Since then the general secretaries have been more discreet , listening and trying to create consensus amongst the members of the security council

The U.N. has a lot of do-goody organizations who do a lot of good
also a lot of technical disputes and agreements can be settled there ,far away from politicians grandstanding , it take for ever but it's cheaper than shooting .

not so cheap for the hapless women and children of rawanda ,gang raped and then hacked to pieces with machetes , i just watched " hotel rawanda" last night ..a good flick and it shows the helplessness and heartache of the UN commander ,forced to stand by and watch the horror show ,and do nothing...orders

Indeed , except that " hotel ruanda " brushed up a few shadows out of the picture ,
The basic law of the united nations charter is the full respect of borders and
    the sovereignty of local government
If you want to do " humanitarian " fair enough but be sure you get a good idea of what you get into ,
not just some press reports published in periodicals whose main aims is to maximize readership and corporate sponsors , Hollywood as the western man conscience doesn't quite make it
Also some degree of fairness is to be expected , will you choose the causes or will some universal standards apply , allied as well as enemies ?? large powers as much as remote dust bowls
The logical result is the "good causes will be those with a good P.R. machine

There is misery galore and there is no shortage of bastardness around
my position is let the locals sort it out , it's not very glorious and some morning when listening to the radio the corn flakes taste sort of funny , but long term it's the only way to go

Bosnia is still on the cards , so is Kosovo ,Palestine, Ruanda, Burundi , Zimbabwe ,Shri-Lanka , Burma... etc .. etc..

The best one can expect is what the ex president jimmy Carter is doing , talk a lot , get people to negotiate , don't assume you know before hand , this kind of things

For information the Tutsis with 15% of the population kept the Hutus 85% in the state of servants, as was their rights as conquerors and masters , during the Belgian rule the Tutsi were forming the backbone of the colonial army and
enthusiastically slaughtered the low arsed , clod kissing Hutus farmers at independence , the Hutus chased them out to Uganda , but they shot down the president plane ( a Hutu ) coming back from some peace talk , the Hutus remembered the massacres of Burundi and got evil , didn't do much good the Tutsis ARE much better fighters and took over the place anyway slaughtering hundreds of thousands of Hutus who had fled to eastern Congo

So , tell me who are the good guys

itrue jeag , it is rather hard sometimes to sort out the good indians from the bad indians until well after the dust has settled ...still , something about hacking school children to death just makes my blood boil whatever evils their grandfathers my have been accused of ...

Yep , I give the worldly , high above the clouds talk ,
but sometimes the sheer evil of things get on top of me ,
An addiction to current affairs is a depressing habit

On the good side our election is over finally and we can all go back to sleep
, we have a brand new left-middle of the road parliament ,about as right wing as you can get if you are from the left
john Howard liberals got laminated on work place legislation , Iraq hardly got mentioned but Kevin Rudd will probably pull the boys out within a year
" after consultation with our allied "

with some dozens serving with the Brits
our military is tiny and we have some deployment in Afghanistan , the pacific islands and Timor .
