    Cool.
While the Sheridan proved to be mildy useful as a scout vehicle, unsure if any of the Soviet missile equiped tanks made any contribution at all.

I suppose man-portable gear's evolution replaces the 'very close support' aspect of Sturmartillerie somewhat too.
The prime ethos of the Stug wasn't fire plans and stand-off stuff, more reactive fast responses against heavier threats on the assault.
I'm no infantryman, far from it, but it certainly looks as if things like Javelin, RPGs etc. now do a similar job to Stug.

I think you are right. The StuGs were viewed by the Germans as mobile antitank guns, weren't they? I think many causal amateurs like me tend to think of them as cool looking turretless tanks (MBTs in modern parlance), which isn't what they were or how they were used.

As MK mentioned earlier, it's a bit off-beam to really see Stugs as AT.
Certainly AT capable on some variants, but really intended to assist infantry against hard points in enemy defences. That may include tanks, but not primarily.
Milan was an expensive AT missile, but British troops in the Falklands used it as an effective 'bunker buster' (as the press of the day termed it), a Stuggish task being carried out by wire-guided infantry weapon.

What were the escort batteries generally composed of, tanks, other tank destroyers like the JagdPanzer IV, or even anti-tank guns?

I got stuck with this picture as this vehicle reminds me of something that Germans developed during the war already. I didn't do any further research myself about this but what do you think (or do you know) if this vehicle is further development of Entwicklung series panzer E-25? Please see the link and scroll down to Jagdpanzer E-25.

EDIT. Jagdpanzer E-25 was never even build as a prototype. It was living only on engineers papers.
