Erwin, that wasnt a joke, there are German chemical warfare troops in the Gulf on the side of the 'coalition', they are the ones who will 'save our butts' if SH does have chemical weapons.

Dutch patriot crews in Turkey! But don't get anything in your heads: according to our Prime Minister, Harry Potter, our support of this war is only politcal...

Yup--these Polish troops--not sure if they are Paras or not--but I had not known about the Danes--thanks for mentioning them as well. [IMG]

Erwin- I'm not kidding about the Danish troops. Denmark is actually at war now. Despite a voting that was almost fifty- fifty Denmark decided to send troops to the region.

    Best regards/ Daniel

Does anyone know how many soldiers from other nations are there? I mean a breakdown like:

    100 Amis
    50 British
    10 Germans
    3 Poles
    2 Danes etc.

    I really don't understand this.

If you are against this war, don't send troops. It would be very logically.

Well the problem is that the people may be against the war but the government do as they wish.

Denmark has sent a submarine, Sälen- the Seal, a warship, 150 soldiers and a team of doctors.

    Best regards/ Daniel

Well I think a lot of people in Europe don't know that Danish, Polish, German and other European troops are also in Iraq.

Erwin, it is partly political (trying to make up for a lack of support) and partly genuine concern I think. It seems to me to be a little like soldiers who don't support the war but still go (of which I am sure there are many).

    Polish Minister Scolds Bush, Rumsfeld

    THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

WARSAW, Poland -- Poland's defense minister scolded President Bush and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Thursday for publicly describing the actions of Polish commandos in Iraq, saying the U.S. leaders shouldn't use the troops "for propaganda."

Bush on Wednesday told U.S. troops at the Army's Central Command in Florida that Polish troops had secured an Iraqi oil platform in the Persian Gulf, while Rumsfeld praised the Poles' professionalism.

But Jerzy Szmajdzinski said the country's troops in Iraq include members of the elite GROM commando special forces unit, and said Warsaw doesn't want information about their activities discussed.

"It is not good when a politician - even if his name is George Bush or Donald Rumsfeld - talks about the actions of special forces," Szmajdzinski told Polish state Radio 1. "We are happy with the high grades given to Polish troops but we are not happy with their use for propaganda."

More than two-thirds of Poles are against the U.S.-led war in Iraq, although the government has supported the United States and has approved the use of up to 200 Polish troops, including 56 GROM members.

Why is everyone skiping Turkey? Don't they claim to be 'Europeans' and don't they want to join the EU? There again, are they really the chicken-sh/t lepers of the Euro/Middle East???

"The last remnant of the once powerful Ottoman Empire, Turkey stayed neutral because it did not want to get involved with Europe’s problems. In October 1939 the Turks signed a treaty with Britain and France, but held back on the conflict in Greece. They also signed a treaty with Germany on 18 June 1941 to keep them out of Turkey as they conquered the east. The Turks consistently turned down offers to join the Allies, and continued to trade freely with Germany. When the Allies threatened to blockade Turkish ports, they finally declared war on Germany on 23 February 1945, but by then the war was nearly over and not one Turkish soldier died."

The 250 German anti-chemical soldiers plus troops to secure them are in Kuwait under Operation "Enduring Freedom", the war against terror. They will not cross the Iraq border nor participate in Operation "Iraqi Freedom", because that would be illegal.

Under the same Operation, German Navy is patrolling the Eastern African coast.

Adittionally, Germany gave some of his Patriots to the Dutch to take them to NATO-member Turkey. No men involved.

Additionally, the Germans provided Israel with Patriots SAMs.

German Armed Forces are 190,000 professionals and 103,000 conscrips (1 year conscipt period).

Of those, 8,781 are on "out of area"-duty, primarily in Kosovo and Afghanistan,

    Cheers,

I think that the Germans still have one of the best armies of the continental Europe.

My bet is on the French Army (Foreign Legion). Additionally,Germany has no arsenal of nulcear, biological and chemical weapons (we signed prohibiting treaties many years ago); so no protection by MAD.

Wasn't really necessary in the past, but I think Germany needs that weapons and the means to deliver it really badly in the future.

    Cheers,
