What were those "end of times" signs again? Pestilence, would this influenza fit? Earthquakes, like the one in Mexico City a few hours ago? Civil unrest, like the armed conflict between the Mexican authorities and the drug cartels? What else?
how about we just kill all the mexicans chickens and pigs in the world and burn there bodys with flamethrowers that should work perfectP_minigun:
Just what we all need to take our minds off the recession, thats what they think. Listening to LBC Radio on this and the general view point is most people are just getting on with life. W.H.O Level 4

Remember the silliness of the 1976 version of the swine flu? I recall Carol Burnette doing a skit with her usual band of cohorts, and they were going out of scene and coming back in scene with fake pig snouts on their faces. Korman couldn't keep a straight face (as usual). That said, there was another bad reaction to this outbreak from then President Ford. It might have been a "good idea" at the time, but turned out to be a bad one in the end. See story in this Time: How to Deal with Swine Flu: Heeding the Mistakes of 1976 - TIME Another one of those "unintended consequences" that sometimes happen.
Historian, those diseases you listed should be taken seriously, every last one of them, even the dead SARS. Maybe you should have used different wording. This will probably blow over by the end of the month, but, while it's going on, remember, it's PEOPLE who are dying.
Maybe so, but not enough that we need to worry about it in quite the way the media are trying to make us. Take this fantastic bit of scare mongering from the BBC: BBC NEWS | World | Americas | Mexico suspected flu toll soars Some particularly good bits: Right, so the confirmed death toll is still just 20, we don't know what caused the others, just suspect. Right, so out of 2000 cases hospitalised, 1000 were sent home and of them 20 have been confirmed as dieing of swine flu, now my GCSE maths tells me that is 1%. Note that this is only looking at hospital cases, only the most severe couple of percent, we don't know how many mild cases there have been, we could be looking at ten thousand overall out of which less than 200 may have died. Note that at this point, where there is good news, we don't see any sources. As per usual anything bad is re-enforced with scary sounding names but good news is just thrown in. Also remember the definitions of epidemic: Pandemic definition - Medical Dictionary definitions of popular medical terms easily defined on MedTerms Now I just heard someone on the radio talk about the fact that there is 'epidemic flu every year' which suggests that it isn't in fact an epidemic as we have roughly the same number of cases every year. Gordon mentioned AIDS, well now that infects 30 million people a year world wide of whom 25 million die, now THAT is something to worry about, this is just a flash up of a particular strain of a rather passe illness. One other thing to keep in mind, Mexico is recovering from an earthquake, it is a developing country and lets face it, isn't best prepared to deal with this kind of situation. It is a tragedy that people are dieing, every death is a tragedy, but we aren't seeing a particularly high number of deaths so it isn't really worth worrying about. Incidentally, according to the WHO influenza kills 'Normal' influenza, that is to say the non-bacon flavoured variety, kills anywhere in between 250 000 - 500 000 people a year worldwide. Should 150 possible deaths in Mexico worry us? Let's face it, it's hardly a dent in the figures for flu. WHO | Influenza So stop worrying, it isn't a particularly severe epidemic, it isn't affecting that many and of them hardly any die. Get on with life and stop panicking.
Stefan, We only need to worry in the UK when the TA get mobilised I trust we can rely on you to tell us when it is happening? Cheers
I never said they weren't, but the NHS is already reporting being snowed under by people with minor sniffles, and all because of scaremongering BS. In WW2 Britain, spreading alarm and despondency was a criminal offence under the Defence Regulations; it's high bloody time that was revived.
