also the lack of trained personal in the fire control parties, and last and not least they left many doors open so it was a combination of unlucky events that doomed the cruiser
What's good down your neck of the woods" Negra Modelo"beer?."Cuervo" tequila..unless you want to sample the well stocked beer cellars of NJ and Penna....
how about a tequila reserva antigua 1800 añejo? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Looking good..In the meantime, l'll have a Buhsmills with a Jagermeister chaser..I am still sorting out the myriad photos that came in that humongous package-Check this out: a Rodman 20-inch at Sandy Hook, New Jersey-(the inscription on the back reads "Feb. 1999)- and a 19th drawing of one of these guns. Three were made, one sold to Peru, and the others were mounted at the Verazzano Narrows. (where the bridge stands now)- At Fort Hamilton (N.Y)-from where l shipped out to basic way back when) there's another 20-inch-Rodman. P.S. Did you check out the Spamish Ciivl War guns and Avro Lincoln photo l posted Salud!
My friend must have taken the photo in 1999. The 15-inch Rodmans and 20-inch were manufactured during the Civil War, According to Comparato( op.cit) ,the 20-in guns took so long to load (their shells weighed 1000 lbs) that the guns mounted at the Verazanno narrows could only fire one round at a target towed by the slowest boat in New York harbor ( a tug with a max speed of 9 knots) before the target was completely out of range..... P.S. check this site : http://www.cwartillery.org/ve/tjrodman.html
Apparently Blücher was carrying a squadron of Gestapo-personnel on board when she sank. Like someone said in other forum: "Couldn't have happened to nicer people )
In the case of the guns that helped sink Blucher the Germans tried to bluff their way past. The shore fort, which was only manned by reservists, counter bluffed by letting the Germans get in close before opening up. Blucher had her guns knocked out and her super structure shot to ribbons. Shore launched torpedos finished her off as she tried to limb out of range. The shore fort then turned it guns on the rest of the German task force which quickly beat a retreat.
To return to the original topic- In 1930 Spain took delivery of several Vickers 381mm L.15 (15 inch 45 caliber) coastal guns-These, and Vickers 305 mm L.50 formerly mounted aboard the Spanish dreadnoughts are still in active duty. The 305mm L.50s received new shells in years following th WW2, and their range reportedly exceeds 43 km
Coastal artillery unit in Menorca island (in Spanish, sorry): http://www.jhbayo.com/llucalary/index.htm It had 381mm guns. I don't know if it's still in service (i doubt it, see the photos), because many coastal artillery units were disbanded and guns scrapped in the late 90's, and the ones still in service have received mobile gun and missile batteries. It has a 301MB video made in 1989 (I haven't seen it).
