In other words, another Labour Party jobworth trying to justify his own salary.
Presumably they also have a special new uniform for any Hassidic/Haredi Jews who might want to join? What about Pagans- will they be required to work on Solstices?
"Tolerance" doesn't mean diluting your own culture because some bleeding heart considers someone elses to be much more important.
Are we taking bets on the life expectancy of any Muslim female firefighter stupid enough to walk into a blaze in that outfit? So why bother supplying it?

But to be serious for a minute...They could move the shifts round to everyones benefit...Its always a bind as any uniformed serviceman or woman will tell you, be it forces, police, fire, ambulance, AA or RAC.....Come Xmas the married guys want it off because of the kids...the sinlies want Saturday Friday Nights off and the Girls all want Saturday off...you see where I'm going with this yet? So no let them have Solstices off...they can do Xmas, Girls can have Friday off as the Hassidic Jews can work to a certain hour or am I wrong? Saturday we have similar probs but They can have that free and let the Muslims do Saturday, Birthdays are now the only problem as I see it. But if your silly enough to have your birthday on Xmas day and be a pagan then its just tough...this has to be pointed out at time of signing on...

 

But that isn't what is being done is it? Sorry, is not wearing a headscarf part of our culture? No, it isn't! There is a hell of a lot more to our culture than hats and scarves, we have centuries of history, art, literature, music, Magna Carta, the great reform acts, philosophy and much more. If you think that lot is endangered by the fire brigade deciding not to deliberately exclude ethnic minorities then I feel truly sorry for you!

As for the whole Hassidic Jews thing, well if you look you will see that this was partly driven by Asians within the fire brigade, therefore it is clearly felt that there is a need for such changes. There has been no push by the Jewish community so there probably won't be any adaptations to uniform regulations for them.

It really worries me when people are so scared of change that they think tolerating and accepting the needs and wishes of others destroys our culture. When they start talking about banning Shakespeare or burning down the Tate then I will worry, but quite frankly we are in more danger of that from our own home grown brand of idiots than any ethnic minority!

I think you should save the pity for yourself, since you're clearly easily led. This idea was spawned by a self-interest group with an ulterior motive; I'll put money on their being no popular support for this within the FB itself.
No-one is suggesting the FB is deliberately excluding anyone, and if they do suggest it, I'll lead a public campaign for the union to sue them for slander.
You know what really worries me? That in a thread called The world of PC Madness there appears to be a PC dogma around which parts of PC dogma we're allowed to have opinions on.
Fuck this- I won't be visiting this thread again in a hurry.

Ok, timeout everyone.

The main reason for this thread was to point out crazy daft things that are happening all round us and to poke fun at it. If anyone is hit by PC Madness I'm sure all will take it up with who ever, be it letter, phone call or in person.

Yes this loony rubbish gets our backs up but lets not let it win and give you or I the grumps. From now on keep it lightweight and relaxed. yes I except I have naffed off some folk here with some of my wording so lets all cool down and chill out.

This is just a request and I am not a moderator.

Sorry Gordon, I simply feel that it is just as much my right to point out that whatever daily mailesque nonsense goes up has a touch of reality added to it. Why on earth are people getting upset about such little things?

As for the FB deliberately excluding people, well, let's see, you have an ethnic group who will not join if they have to break the rules laid down by their religion or culture to do so, if you make it so that they have to break these rules then you are deliberately excluding them. What is the problem with saying 'sure, wear a head-scarf as long as it is the one laid down in our uniform regulations,' everybody will be happy. What does it matter? Please, explain to me how this is actually harming our culture? All it is doing is making it a bit more inclusive which surely is one of the greatest strength of the 'British' culture.

OK, what do you make of this, I got chatty to a teacher this morning at a school near me and she came out with something very odd. It was the schools policy to encourage parents to drive there children to the school or to escort them all the way if walking to school. Reason, the school feels we are living in dangerous times where children would be attacked on the way to school!

I put to her I see no differences from my time and now in the terms of a possible incident. She agreed but felt it was better to be safe than sorry. I then asked, did they have any evidence that we today live in more of a dangerous place? The answer was no. I also asked are all the parents going along with this request, again the answer was no.

 

Ah well, it sounds like reasonably sensible advice, 'if you can, take your kids to school' but obviously people don't have to actually listen to it.
