And yet they fight in Iraq too, which was a memorable break with the regulations agreed to in 1946.

No, they haven't been involved in any combat nor did they intend to. They sent only noncombatant forces to Iraq.

But they were armed, I've seen pictures in the newspapers. They may have been peacekeeping forces but they're still forces.

They are of course armed, but only for self defence, they do indeed not participate in any combat operations.

I certainly wouldn't set foot in Iraq unless I was armed.

Might I ask why you rank Germany so low?

It can't be just their pacifist attitude since you rank them below Japan who have exactly the same look on war.

    hmm,
    I´m not a pacifist and I´m not a war junkee.^^

Why I rank germany sooo low?
Well, because the Bundeswehr has old equippment.

    Why germany below japan??

    Look at this, please:

    Germany:
262.750 Soldiers and a Budget of 23,9 Mrd. Euro

The Luftwaffe has Tonardos 322 IDS and 34 ECR
    and old F-4F Phantom II

    Japan:

240.000 Soldiers and a Budget of 45,8 Mrd. Euro

    Japans ASDF has 203 F-15J/DJ

I can´t imagine that Tornados can beat F-15Js.

The german Bundesmarine has mighty ships like the "Sachsen".

    the Frigates of the Brandenburg-class

and the new 15 Corvettes of the Braunschweig-class as a replacement for the "Schnellboote", yes, but

    Japans MSDF has

26 Destroyers, destroyer like the Shirane-class.

    29 Frigates

Can´t imagine that Germany can beat Japan in the Air and on the Sea.

*May I missunderstood your question, sry for that if, I´m just 18 years old and i have not such good abilitys to explain sthin´ in english so well ;) *
    Regards,
    Che.

If you are talking about power and euipment then China and Russia should be in the top 3.

    Russia???

They have 330.000 Soldiers and a Budget of 18 Mrd. US-$

The russian Airforce has only 22 modern a/c like the Su-30 Flanker !!! and the rest is oldfashioned "cold-war-stuff"
    21.370 MBTs
    29.000 Armored Vehicles
    20.500 Artillery
    1.700 Armed Helicopters
    1.200 Helicopters

Thats mainly T-72 and some T-80s, also many many BMP-2s

2.600 Combat Aircrafts,, not tech. checked, many out of service because they have no replacements for defect parts of their a/c.

I think that the russian army is ineffective atm.

    Regards,
    Che.

Well, I think large numbers are non relevant. Look at "Unternehmen Barbarossa".
From 22 Juni to 22 August the Wehrmacht destroyed or captured:

    1.250.000 Russian soldiers
    14000 Tanks and AVs
    15000 Art
    11250 a/c

    2. Oct. to 20. October the Wehrmacht caputerd 675.000 russian Soldiers in the Battle of Wjasma and Brjansk.

I think that numbers say nothin´ about the quality of material and soldiers.
So how I´ve come to conclusion that I rank Germany below Japan?
It´s because the japanese Army is well equipped and they have modern Material, I think also that japanese Soldiers are well trained.

Germany has old equippment, soldiers trained in only nine months.

    Regards,
    Che.

I agree that numbers do not always matter but with overwhelming numbers it can.

well i think you cant say who has the mightiest millitary in the world
you must set a difference between air sea and land
in the air the top scorers are
    1.usa
    2.israel
    3.france
    4.uk
    5.germany
    6.japan
    7.sweden
    8.russia
    9.china
    10.south korea

    and on land

    1.usa
    2.Germany
    3.uk
    4.france
    5.russia
    6.china
    7.japan
    8.india
    9.italy
    10.spain

    and on sea

    1.usa
    2.russia
    3.france
    4.uk
    5.china
    6.japan
    7.italy
    8.spain
    9.germany
    10.canada

in the air i voted germany befor japan because they soon recive eurofighter to replace the f-4 and the eurofighter knocks out the f-15 easily!! our british friends prooved it when a two seater training eurofighter beats a f-15 even the f-15 was in the advatage to engage first from behind but the ef-2000 managed it
and the second reason is the japanese air force has a good fighter weapon but lacks in ground strike capapility they only got about 70 old mitsubishi f-1 while germanys got over 300 tornados in the ground strike sea strike and ecr role plus 180 eurofighters these are more fighter jets then japan got.

i rated russia and china so low because they got much personell and equitment but 90% of their stuff is no match for a modern western weapon system.

and on land i rated germany on second place because they got the finest tank leo 2a6 and many more sophisticated land systems like pzh2000
and compared with france or uk germany has about 2 or 3 times so many mbt and apc like the other and the quality standard is high.

    Let's see.

    1. USA - technologically superior to any other army in the world and backed by the most powerful economy in the world
    2. Israel - experienced in combat against more numerous opponents, with trained civilians and also a country on a very high technological level
    3. China - we have a joke: The Chinese generals are planning a war against Russia. The "chief general" says: "we shall attack with 4 million soldiers on the left, 1 million on the right and tanks in the middle." Then one of the lower rank generals raises his hand and asks: "BOTH tanks?". But do imagine what those - in fact - 2.2 million troops can do. Even if 90% of then were killed on the way to Moscow, the remaining 10% would still make one of the largest armies ;)
    4. Germany - maybe thier Air Force is not of the highest standard (and will not be until they introduce the Typhoon), but their Land Forces (the Leopard 2 a6 which is probably the best tank at the moment) and Navy look very impressive.
    5. Russia - you can call their army any way you like, but not "modern". On the other hand, what they lack is money and good will of the politicinas, because the Russians know how to make superb airplanes, submarines, tank and... practically everything

just remember the wake up call the usa got in the military games with india, the newest russians planes bet the crap out of the american planes ,f-15 and f-16, and now china is geting a license to built the planes, so who's inferior now?
p.s. and the even new f-18 superhornet, is having a lot of problems
