Tribute to Monte Casino Veteran and Olympic Champion Alain Mimoun

    Alain Mimoun has died , aged 92.

    Alain Mimoun joined the Free French in North Africa and fought Rommel's Afrika Korps. He then fought in Italy , including the Battle of Monte Cassino (83th Génie Battaillon and the 3rd Algerian Division of the French Expediotionnary Corps. He was badly wounded at Monte Casino by three German shells parts in the leg and taken to a U.S. Hospital for amputation of a leg, but a French medic prevented this and saved his leg.

    He was then taken to the French Hospital in Naples and healed . He returned to combat and particpated at Operation Dragoon in August 1944.

    Afte rthe war Mimoun became Olympic Champion at the Marathon of Melbourne , Australia in 1956.

    He has been awarded the Legion of Honnour
