Thanks for the photos. I dug up the Yahoo article and it said "of the gun turrets had been removed and the radar tower dismantled". My bad, should always read carefully. However, I find this kind of odd. "Despite the extensive repairs, the Iowa could not steam to Los Angeles under its own power because the contract with the Navy forbade it, Rogers said. The Navy did not want a ship of this power fully operational outside of its control. The Iowa was to proceed down the coast of California at rate of about 6 miles per hour, a fraction of the 38 mph it could make in its heyday." I thought the engines would be disassambled, rather then a Navy contract forbade.
I have series of slides taken in October 1985, most of them onboard the mighty ship, when the Iowa visited Oslo. Back then she was still in her days of glory and in ship shape. I plan to get me a slide scanner, I have a couple of thousands slides lying about waiting to be converted into digital format, so I'll see what I can do about it.

well today is the the day she's OPEN! This is the memorial on turret 2. The visitors have been wonderful and are enjoying their tour.
